🎸 Struggling with That One Hard Bassline? Here’s How to Fix It

1️⃣ Problem: You’re nailing your bassline until the challenging section, where your technique suddenly falls apart.

2️⃣ Common Mistake: Repeating the same practice habits daily without real progress. Switching approaches too quickly is the core issue here.

3️⃣ Identifying the Mistake: Constantly changing strategies—playing slower, using a metronome, or seeking advice—without giving any method time to work leads to this cycle.

💥 Solution

4️⃣ Focus on the Transition: Instead of isolating just the difficult part, practice the bar before and after it to build fluidity.

5️⃣ Isolate, Then Integrate: Start slow, integrate the surrounding bars, and keep refining until transitions are smooth.

🎸 Result: This approach reduces wasted time, strengthens technique, and keeps challenging parts from disrupting your flow.

What’s the quickest way to develop speed in your bass playing?

If you said practicing with a metronome, or starting slowly and building up the speed, you’d be wrong.

It’s actually got nothing to do with how you practice.

Most bassists actually make one mistake that destroys their playing speed, and they make this mistake before they even pick up the bass.

So, what's the mistake?

Inside our hands there are several groups of muscles that work together to move the various parts of the hand.

However, the way that most bassists play the bass, forces these muscles to work against each other and when they do that, playing fast becomes impossible.

If you don’t believe me, tense your thumb, then try to move your fingers quickly.

It’s hard right? Like, really hard!

But creating tension this way is exactly what bass players do when they rest their thumb on the pick up, curve their hands to pluck the strings or bend their wrists.

It slows them down and it’s the big mistake that most bassist make.

So what technique should you use to avoid creating tension this way?

What To Use Instead

Since making this discovery, I've been building, perfecting and then using a technique that keeps all the muscles of the hand working together in perfect harmony.

And when you play with this technique, speed, relaxation, consistency and accuracy happen almost automatically.

And the best part is, because this technique utilizes all the movements that our hands do naturally, it can be mastered in 60-minutes.

How You Can Learn This Technique

On September 22nd I will be teaching this technique in a live 60-minute workshop.

During the workshop you’ll learn:

✅ My complete system for building a much faster technique

✅ How to make your playing 10x more accurate

✅ How to master total consistency between fingers when playing 8th & 16th notes

✅ How to develop total control of your technique

✅ How to relax & stop digging in so much when you play

✅ How to mute effectively

✅ How to make the floating thumb technique feel effortless & natural

✅ All exercises in full TAB & notation

✅ All exercises come organised into "built-for-you" practice routines

And on top of all that, everyone who attends will also get a free ticket to a 60-minute, live Q&A session that’s happening after the workshop where you can ask me questions, get feedback on your playing, or anything else.

The workshop will be available to purchase as an on-demand recording but that will mean you’ll miss out on the live Q&A and the chance to put your questions to me.

And, the early access discount price will have expired.

Over the last few weeks, I've been chatting to a lot of bassists here in this great community and I've realised that a lot of them have the same problem.

You might even have it yourself.

Over the last few weeks I've noticed how many bass players have said they have trouble with;

✅ Getting consistency in their fingerstyle technique

✅ Building fingerstyle speed

✅ Getting their technique to be accurate

✅ Avoiding fingerstyle technique altogether and just using a pick

✅ Getting a good tone with their fingers

Since I began teaching bass, I've helped hundreds of bassists get past these problems.

And the knowledge that helped them overcome these limitations is, in my view, too good not to share.

That's why I've spent the last few weeks working on a really simple, interactive solution for to these technique problems, and I'm nearly ready to share it with you.

A lot of work has gone into this event, and I'm so proud of it. I really can't wait to share it with you.

Over the coming days, I'll be dropping some behind-the-scenes content and info about this new event, which will take your bass playing to a completely new level.

And, there are going to be 5 very special, free gifts I'm giving away for the first 5 people who join the event.

I really appreciate all the support, comments and replies you've given me over the last few years!

Even my last YouTube video is about to hit 10k views in a week and I can't believe it.

I really couldn't have built this event without you which is why I'm so excited to share it with you.

I think you're going to love it.

Speak soon,

Hugh

P.S. - Those 5 special free gifts I mentioned? They're only being sent out to bassists signed up to my email news letter.

BASS PLAYERS!

Is playing with a pick holding you back?

Playing bass with a pick isn’t wrong, but relying on it too much can limit your technique.

To improve, add fingerstyle to your practice routine by playing basslines you know with your fingers.

This helps develop coordination and balances your skills.

Avoid the mistake of depending solely on a pick—focus on finger technique to become a more versatile player.

Do you know how to build an effective practice routine?

Well, when most bassists practice…

They sit down, and get their phone out, with some Netflix on in the background and loads of other distractions.

And the problem isn’t that their phones are in the room.

It’s that all these distractions allow them to kick the can down the road, so to speak.

If they can send a text then sure, their practice can wait.

If a good movie comes on then they can do their exercises in a few minutes.

And if they turn all these things off, they just get distracted by something else.

It’s a bit like having 6 months to pay a gas or electricity bill. You can easily forget about it and keep putting it off.

But if the bill was due in 6 minutes from now, you’d focus and get it done.

As mundane as this example is, it really holds the key to building an effective practice routine.

However, the change you need to make to keep yourself focused and productive is to give yourself a hard deadline.

So the next time you practice, write out a list of all the exercises you want to practice.

Then write a time limit next to each exercise, set a timer on your phone, and get to work.

And once the exercise is done. It’s done.

A deadline won’t mean anything if you can go past it so once the timer hits zero you have to stop.

And if you didn’t practice because you were on Instagram or texting your friends, then that will be a reminder that next time, you should stay focused.

Try this out and let me know what you think!
