🌺 I’ve been celebrating Onam every year without exactly knowing what it is for. When I did a little bit of research, this is what I found. Now I wonder if it’s a myth or if there is some truth to it. Guess what I’ll be asking the next guest on the podcast 👧🏻🎙️?!
🌸 The Legend of King Mahabali:
The core of Onam’s spiritual significance revolves around the story of King Mahabali, a benevolent demon king who was loved by his subjects for his righteousness and generosity. According to Hindu mythology, Mahabali’s rule was so just and prosperous that even the gods became concerned. Lord Vishnu, in his Vamana avatar, appeared and requested three paces of land. Mahabali agreed, and Vishnu’s third step placed Mahabali in the netherworld. However, Mahabali was granted permission to return to his people once a year, which is celebrated as Onam. The story symbolizes the themes of sacrifice, devotion, and humility, as Mahabali represents an ideal ruler who put the welfare of his people above his own pride.
Cool story right? I’m sure there were advanced technologies all those years back. We are all just trying to remember that and bring it now.
