An old friend had the old Dell Vostro i3 3rd gen laptop and it was on Hard Drive and Windows 7 installed and it felt sluggish to use like all the time.

I remember thinking that maybe SSD is the answer but before doing that I installed either Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 and again, disabled all updates except the security ones.

The laptop was now atleast usable. And it kept being like that for years to come.

This was a weird phenomenon that I want to try again because it makes more sense that an OS with lower headroom would be faster but it wasn't even after a lot of defragmentation.

I need to replicate this.

I have this Dell Laptop from a few generation ago (wil post specs later) but it was on Ubuntu Mate and the thing always felt so sluggish and slow all the time while using it to make some python applications that it felt like there is no other option than to replace it.

Finally, after we parted way, I installed Windows 10, and wow! The transformation was amazing. It now is a usable machine. Mind you, I have disabled all updates except the security ones. But the difference is huge.

That's why I don't immediately recommend on older hardware to simply install Linux, I ask them to try an older version of Windows first.

While installing Windows 98 to play old classics later[1], I realized that Windows 98 is something I have installed many times and not Windows XP as I originally thought.

All Intel Core Ultra CPUs have a Tjmax of 110°C. That might be a concern if it heats up other parts of the motherboard regardless of what laptop it is in. Will check in a livestream soon. Till then, I am not comfortable recommending them.
