New video is up! It's about a lady's struggles as a mother, to educate her daughter at a small age in a remote environment. After exhausting all options, she decided to open an entire school for her 3 years old daughter to be able to educate her the way she wanted to. When I met her, this subject just happened randomly during our conversation and I realised that this is a great story that needs to be told. Hope this will be of help to parents of young children and humanity in general!

What does it mean to relocate to the mountains, beyond an instagrammable lifestyle?

In the upcoming video, I will meet Malika Virdi, who was born in a middle class punjabi family and brought up in Delhi. She decided to move to Munsiyari (Uttarakhand) 30 years ago, to live a life close to the land.

In her words:

'I had met some women when I was a very young child. A woman came to our house from a distant family who drove a tractor. I just really liked the notion of an educated person who was running her own farm.

When I grew up, I began visiting the Himalayas for mountaineering and like everyone else, felt the innate draw towards nature, as a human being.

Once I actually moved here and in the very beginning when I started farming, people did make fun. 'Oh you should leave this, you'll end up hurting your feet.' At a personal level it was hurtful that you've made a place your home but the locals are saying - who are you? But in a way I also deeply respected that. You know like- don't presume you can just walk into our lives and we will welcome you. For me it was a signal - prove yourself!

I said- you're right. I have never done this before but at least give me a chance. So it was truly appealing to them and saying - please allow me. Give me the time, give me the space to prove myself. When I had 13 quintals of potato harvest for the very first time, the very people who used to say that you'll hurst yourself, came to have a quick look. They appreciated it and went back. And I felt that I had gained respect their lives.'

In these 30 years, India has changed a lot economically. People are desiring to relocate to the mountains now more than ever. What are the nuances of living a life in the ecological sensitive areas, such as the Himalayas? What does it take to live this life on a community level? What does it mean for the wildlife?

I asked her many such questions. She shared what she thinks she has been able to learn and gain in life. Some parts of this conversation are coming up on YouTube real soon!

PARTICIPATION NEEDED: If you are someone who has moved from a smaller village/town/city to a bigger or supposedly better city, read on.

I have been wanting to create something around the phenomenon of human migration for a long time. It’s a topic that is close to my heart. A couple of years ago, I shot a film in Uttarakhand on this particular subject. What I shot was really hard-hitting and I realized this is a much deeper as well as larger phenomenon and I will come back to it later. I am now developing the film.

This is where you come in. I'd like to have small bits and pieces in the film as interactions with the subscribers of Ethereal, which I’m going to record over individual video calls. I am particularly looking for people who have temporarily or permanently migrated from a village, smaller town/city to a bigger or supposedly better town or city. This could be for the want of better opportunities or because of the lack of basic necessities. If you feel that you’d be interested to be a part of this, you can send me your name and mail ID here: forms.gle/Bae62CRSrPtRoxtD7

In the beginning of 2021, I spent time living with a community called the Manganiars in a village named Kanoi in Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer. The Manganiars have been professional singers, genealogists, musicians and storytellers, in the social structure that has prevailed for centuries. But as times are changing with a world that is more connected than ever before, things are changing in interesting ways.

Through this video series, I aim to tell a story that consists of not just music but much more about the complexities of life in a place deep in rural Rajasthan. As I lived with them, I understood the importance of a lot of things and I hope I’ll be able to tell the same through these videos.

Part 1 is now streaming. In this video, I tell the story of a man who spent his life documenting the various indigenous communities and folk art in Rajasthan. Watch here: https://youtu.be/7Ix3_3MRkFM

It's about time I did a Q&A video. Send over your questions in comments or over mail - contact@etherealcolours.com. Any sort of questions are welcome, however, I'd love to go beyond things like camera, equipment, etc. How about giving me something that would make me think a bit? Maybe related to experiences, learnings, storytelling, ideas, perspectives, humans, life - some larger and some not so larger question?

India's Natural Venice and Climate Change: https://youtu.be/P1E5o0srEOo

Munroe island is situated in the Kollam district somewhere in the southern part of Kerala. When I travelled to this place earlier this year to film and document it, all I knew was that it's one of the places affected by climate change. What I discovered was that it's one of the most beautiful places I’ve been to. This is the story of my interaction with this island and its people.

Do you think you are not able to remember things as well as you were able to do before? If yes, what do you think is the reason? (Asking for a video I am working on).

Hello Folks!

So here’s one more piece of news coming in! I have launched my own online course about - How to Become a Travel YouTuber. This is up on a platform called Graphy - which is an app by the makers of Unacademy. A graphy is basically like a book in video form having different chapters and pages.

In this course, I’ll be discussing things like:

-How to Start Your Journey as a Travel YouTuber
-Understanding YouTube Algorithm
-How to Travel for Making Videos
-Finding Awesome Unexplored Places and Stories
-Making Your Equipment Compliment Your Storytelling
-Finding the Right Music
-Sources of Income and Collaborations

I’ll be adding new chapters every week and might add furthermore new chapters later on - based on the response and questions I get.

Follow the link to get access: share.graphyapp.co/ak9hYou’ll of course have to download the app. It has some overall good content, btw.

P.S. This course is very different from the Tripoto Workshop I’m doing. That’s more about becoming a ‘professional filmmaker’ while this is about becoming a ‘travel youtuber’.

Cheers!
