Our yard has been bustling with these tiny Flower Flies, also known as Hoverflies and Syrphid Flies. They mimic bees, but they’re harmless and, in fact, beneficial - the adults are pollinators and the larvae feed on aphids.

Eastern Eyed Click Beetle, also called an Eyed Elater. The “eyes” are fake eyespots that evolved as a defense mechanism. When threatened, click beetles can fling themselves into the air, and their body produces a loud click when they do it. This beetle was huge - maybe 2 inches.

American Robins not only hunt earthworms by sight, but they can also detect them with their hearing. There’s some dispute though about whether the bird’s head tilt is to help it see or help it hear its prey, or both. They also hunt using touch - by feeling vibrations in the ground.

I love the patterns in this fallen tree caused by (I think) woodworms.

I spotted these baby praying mantises climbing up the outside of my house just after they’d hatched from their egg case, which is called an ootheca.
