I am halfway through reading both of these books with my two boys. Weāre reading them for Brave Writer.
I love them already! Iāve never read either one of them, although Iāve watched and loved the movie of The Princess Bride
Reading to my kids is my most favorite thing. There is so much to learn about just by reading an incredible story. I love the conversations reading sparks.
Have you read these books?

There is nothing that gets me more excited about learning with my kids than reading really good books with them.

Some people have been asking if I still unschool. Here's my answer.
When I first heard the term āunschoolingā back when my first child was around 3 years old, I was given a book called āteach your ownā by John Holt. John Holt coined that term. He was a former school teacher who saw firsthand that the school system doesnāt always work for kids. He wrote many books about his alternative ideas to traditional school, like giving kids tools and opportunities to learn in a more meaningful, natural way.
I liked his perspective and ideas in that first book, and went on to read most of his books. I also interviewed Pat Farenga who worked for John Holt when he was still alive and has since taken over the Growing Without Schooling company. In that interview, I asked Pat specifically why John called his alternative to traditional school āunschoolingā because too many people hear that term and think parents choose to not send their kids to school, keep their kids at home, and donāt try to teach them anything in any way.
Pat debunked that. His quote from that interview that I share all the time is, āUnschooling means learning that doesnāt take place in school or look like learning in school. Thatās it.ā
Iāve been an unschooler because I chose to homeschool my kids- educating them at home- with alternatives to how traditional school teaches.
That means I have used curriculum and I have also used real books, hands-on activities, real-life experiences, and conversations with my kids. Iāve used it all.
The problem that has come up is people who have seen videos on tiktok where there are mothers claiming to unschool their kids who- it seems- are not teaching their kids at all. Iām not on TikTok and I havenāt seen these videos, but if they are real, these people are misusing the term. Unschooling was never supposed to mean child neglect.
Iāve tried helping people understand what it truly is and how to do it but Iām weary of defending it and trying to re-explain it to people who watch my videos and still donāt get it. Iām weary of the misinformed comments.
Iāve decided to go forward with my channel with content that shares my favorite resources for homeschooling, motherhood, and lifestyle. I will still support other moms doing this homeschooling/parenting thing. Iām still the same person; I just wonāt teach about or use the term āunschoolingā anymore.
I hope all of this makes sense.

Firing up my laminator to laminate my kidsā school schedules and daily routines. This way, theyāll be able to use dry erase markers to cross off what theyāve done and we can reuse them for the whole year.
I love this thing! Mine is super old, but hereās the latest model:

I got my degree in Elementary Education because I love working with kids and helping them grow in their learning, but before I ever got an official teaching position, I became a mom and realized being a full-time mom was my true calling. I've homeschooled for 12+ years, I have four kids, and I love sharing advice, tips, and resources with people.
My passion for my family and for yours is to facilitate learning for our kids through 1. Books 2. Experiences and 3. Conversations. Over my years of homeschooling my kids, I've found that these three basic ways of learning are truly the best for meaningful, child-focused education.
