DEADLINE is doing a series of reports about the challenges facing the media & entertainment industry. I had an opportunity to speak with Lynette Rice about my observations coaching clients who have experienced career setbacks including job loss and how they may actually be grieving. It's important for folx to know they have permission to mourn not only their jobs, but how their industry has changed. Read the entire article:

Hereās me in the chorus of Hello Dolly, circa 1982. My daughter Auroraās passion for skiing thrills me and also made me slightly nauseous. I was delighted that she found something she loved and wanted to commit to. It reminded me of my passion for story and how, as a teenager, I would read anything I could get my hands on, watch A LOT of television and audition for every play and musical.
I also hate the cold. While I exercise, Iām not an athlete and know nothing about winter sports. The idea of being someplace cold for months at a time makes my whole body tighten and cringe.
But what are you gonna do when someone you love loves something you donāt love? You figure it out.

Whenever I make a mistake, my new best practice is to remind myself that Iām no longer a child valiantly striving to take care of my mother. Iām an adult who has the resources to respond when mistakes happen ā and accept the hard truth that sometimes mistakes will cost me money, opportunity, relationships, trust, or my reputation. But those costs are not permanent and can be course corrected.
How do I remember this new best practice? I keep a photo of myself as a kid on my desk. How do you handle mistakes?

The Yellow Pages Newsletter has been one of my favorite recommendations since I learned how to make recommendations on Substack! What I love about āŖ@mslynnchenā¬'s newsletter is that a) Iām always learning something new b) about cool AAPI people or things in art and culture that I didnāt know existed c) from informed folx who are true fans and share the love. Iām also a big fan of Lynnās ā she's an actress/writer/director and someone whoās been guiding me in hitting my moonshot. The Yellow Pages is super fun and comes from the heart. yellowpages.substack.com/p/career-coach-laverne-mcā¦

Career Coach & Grief Recovery Specialist
Hollywood Film and TV Producer Laverne McKinnon supports ambitious, driven people who have hit a speed bump regain momentum so they can achieve their goals. Frequently the speed bump is related to the inevitable missteps, obstacles, and failures that come with taking big swings. Failing to acknowledge and process these losses properly can lead to imposter syndrome, burnout, low self-esteem, confusion, and even result in completely abandoning our dreams. š That's why she strongly advocates for embracing grief awareness (along with other tools like values identification, knowing your why, sharpening executive function, habit forming, and more.) By doing so, we can effectively navigate challenges and regain motivation.
