DECLASSIFIED: CHARL KINNEAR INVESTIGATION
On Wednesday, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) announced its decision to declassify the investigation report into the assassination of Detective Charl Kinnear. Kinnear, who was leading an investigation into alleged police involvement in Cape Town gang activities, was killed in front of his home in September 2020.
"Announcing the decision to de-classify the report, IPIDās Executive Director, Ms Dikeledi Ntlatseng indicated that IPIDās decision was compelled by developments that have taken place around the very issues that prompted it to classify the report in 2022.
In 2022, IPID was concerned about the information of witnesses hence it felt that it was sensible to protect witnesses. āCurrently the information of witnesses is now in the public domain. Therefore, such information is no longer compromised,ā said Ms Ntlatseng.
In 2022, #CarteBlanche sat down with the Kinnear family. His wife, Nicolette, told us of the immeasurable pain his death had caused, while also voicing her frustrations as the investigation into his murder dragged on. You can watch the full story now on #CarteBlanche.

Then, on 22 October this year, Liebenberg, his wife Dezzi, and seven others were arrested on various charges including fraud, money laundering, theft and racketeering. Police confirmed more arrests are likely to follow. Watch our 2020 investigation into the scheme now, and keep an eye on our social pages for more updates as they happen. #CarteBlanche
