Important news for every dog lover, especially those considering importing a pup into the U.S.! The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has just announced tighter rules regarding the importation of dogs from countries considered high risk for rabies, starting July 14. ๐ฆ๐ผ๐๐ฟ๐ฐ๐ฒ: ๐๐ก๐ก
CDC's change in policy comes in response to an alarming surge in imported dogs that weren't effectively vaccinated against rabies, which prompted significant public health concerns. As such, they have decided to temporarily suspend the import of dogs from over 100 countries where rabies is still a major issue.
These changes impact thousands of pups - around 6% of the 1 million dogs imported into the U.S. every year come from countries now on the CDC's high-risk list. Thatโs approximately 60,000 dogs affected.
There are some exceptions to the rule. Dogs may still be imported from high-risk countries if they have lived in a lower-risk country for at least 6 months or since birth. Alternatively, dogs with valid rabies vaccination certificates and rabies serology test results might be considered for entry on a case-by-case basis.
The CDC acknowledges the inconvenience caused to pet owners but underlines the necessity of these measures for the larger public health interest. They assure the public that this is temporary until a more permanent and effective strategy can be implemented.
