Sometimes the scariest journeys start with the smallest signs...
It was September 2012, and I was doing everything "right." Fresh off competition prep, I was taking a strategic break before my next training phase. Just a quick shoulder workout, then off to celebrate a friend's restaurant opening. Nothing unusual about that, right?
Wrong.
What I thought was just a pulled muscle in my right shoulder wasn't behaving like any injury I'd seen before. Each breath became more shallow. Each movement was more uncomfortable. But surely it was just overtraining, right?
My family was away enjoying Labor Day weekend at the beach. Alone at home, I had one person to call - my neighbor, a firefighter who happened to be on shift.
What followed was surreal: lights, sirens, radio chatter.
"Chest pain," they reported.
"No," I kept insisting through increasingly labored breaths, "it's my shoulder..."
Here's the thing about being a fitness professional: we're trained to push through discomfort. To distinguish between good pain and bad pain. But sometimes, our bodies speak a language we're not yet fluent in.
That ride to the hospital? It wasn't just a journey across town. It was the beginning of a path that would completely transform my understanding of health, wellness, and the incredible wisdom our bodies hold.
