What goes through a surgeon’s mind just before the surgery?
Every surgeon goes to the theatre (operation theatre) with an intent of making a positive difference in the patient’s life. As a hip surgeon, I have to take care of many aspects
1. Taking the pain away
2. Making both legs equal
3. Giving complete freedom of movement after surgery
4. Bringing the patient out of bed as soon as possible
5. Making the patient walk without any limp after the surgery
6. Using Minimally invasive techniques (MIS) to help the patient recover faster
7. Keeping them nearly pain free
8. Sending them back to work ASAP. Keeping a patient out of work for long also adds to the financial burden of surgery. If someone earns 50,000₹ per month and if they stay at home for 2’months then it’s additional cost of 1 lakh rupees.
Having said that, there is also an emotional aspect of it. Patients with a damaged hip are mostly limping due to pain, making them walk slowly & making it difficult to take stairs. That makes them withdraw from their social life & many of them are in depression or negative thinking. They stop going to social gatherings because everyone asks - what happened to you, why are you limping ? & they get sick and tired of answering that question.
So as a surgeon
9. I want to put them back into their social lives with their friends and family
10. & Give them not only a long lasting hip joint but also the self confidence to be a go getter in life
