Proof that you do not need the latest most up to date technology to capture a decent photo. Taken on my 19 year old Canon 5D DSLR with a cheap (around USD $80) 50mm f/1.8 lens. Canon 5D Classic video is coming soon!

This photo was taken last week. At first glance it's just a photo of my cat, Tommy, but there's a lot more to it than that. Tommy has been with me since July 2005, when I first moved to Shanghai. I found him abandoned on the street. That was 19 years ago. I took the photo with my original Canon 5D which was also released in 2005, 19 years ago. It's still a fabulous camera, despite only having 12 megapixels. But if you watched my video on megapixels, you'll know that 12 megapixels is plenty. If you've abandoned some of your older cameras in favour of shiny new ones, then fair enough. But every now an then, take out the old camera, blow the dust off them, and give it some love.

Greetings from Pisa, Italy. If you haven't been to Pisa, you may not know what these people are doing. Basically they're trying to take photos at such an angle as to give the impression they are holding up the leaning tower of Pisa. But at the 'wrong' angle, I think it can look quite amusing. Well, I think so and I enjoyed taking photos of the people taking photos. In places with lots of tourists, it's MUCH easier to take street photos because everyone else is taking photos and you can be hidden in plain sight. A good option if you are just starting out and a little nervous about aiming your camera at strangers.

Hope everyone is enjoying their summer (or winter if you're in the southern hemisphere!). I am currently in Italy, enjoying a change of scenery from the usual Shanghai streets. Here are a few snaps I've taken so far in Milan. My favorite is the mother walking with her two young children, one on each side. I'll be doing a video later on with some highlights from the trip, but here's a sneak peek for all of you.

Someone left a one sentence comment on one of my videos yesterday. They said "The piano in the background isn't doing you any favours". The old adage - if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything certainly does not apply on the internet. But I would love to have your opinions on this. So, music: yay or nay? Please vote so I can se what people prefer.

I seem to have triggered someone in a Leica Q2 / Q3 group when I suggested that nobody needs 60 megapixels. He took offense at that and said I shouldn't speak for everyone. I do agree with him, there may be some people who do legitimately need that many pixels, but my point was more that camera manufacturers seem obsessed with ever increasing pixel counts. 20 years ago, professional photographers were fine with 20 megapixel sensors and produced stunning images, because they knew what they were doing. The Canon 1DX MkIV, launched in 2009, had a 16MP cropped sensor and cost $5000 at launch.

So anyway, the discussion and outrage motivated me to do a bit more research which led to a new video topic: How Many Megapixels Do You Really Need? Spiler alert - it's less than you might think. Check out the video which has just been published on the channel. And let me know your thoughts on the constant pixel inflation that we are seeing.

The Zenza Bronica ETRS is a fantastic camera to enter the world of medium format film photography. Sometimes referred to as the poor man's Hasselblad, these cameras are capable of producing amazing results for a fraction of the cost of Hasselblad cameras. In a recent video, I explained the benefits of the ETRS, how it works and offer advice for anyone considering buying one in 2024 as well as sharing some of the stunning photos I've taken with this camera: https://youtu.be/HxlIGJtFdRU?si=vjcv-...

I've been using the Leica Q2 as my main everyday carry camera for a year or two now and love it. Leica launched its successor, the Leica Q3 last year with several improvements, including a bigger sensor (60MP!), tilt screen, USB-C and HDMI ports, a faster Maestro IV processor and wireless charging (with optional accessories). The Q3 is now around $2000 more than a (second hand) Q2, so is it worth the upgrade? I discuss it in a recent video and you can watch it here if you haven't already: https://youtu.be/r6ZDgWUrkFE?si=SVZl5...

Well, we seem to have come full circle. We've all heard stories of people creating photos with AI and passing them off as their own photographs, but this has got to be a first: someone entering a photo in an AI photo competition and then winning a prize, only to later be disqualified after it was discovered that the photo was in fact taken with a real camera! petapixel.com/2024/06/12/photographer-disqualified…
