Tom Chen was born in Wuwei, China in 1963. He obtained his B.Sc. in Chemistry (1983), and M.Sc. in Radiochemistry (1986) from Beijing Normal University (BNU), China. He taught at Fudan University in Shanghai between 1986-1989. He continued his chemistry work in USA until 1997, and worked for NASA, State of Oregon DHS, Intel, HP and Microsoft as data or software engineer.
One of his life time endeavour is linguistics and learning methods of English. He designed SPELLWELL, a.k.a CSPELL (R), to help others learn English words in a fun way. The game is similar to the widely popular GO game in its methods of play, except that in CSPELL a chessman must spell a correct word when placed on the board.
