The moment Lancaster asks about his mother, and freddie is utterly silent...That look in his eyes is chilling. It tells us everything we need to know about Freddie right there, While it takes other filmmakers sometimes the entire film length to convey as much.
In a eerily similar performance, Joaquin plays Arthur Fleck essentially the same way. And the performance is phenomenonal, but the filmmaking isn't as subtle. Not to say Todd Phillips and crew didn't do an incredible job, plus the direction of Joker was supposed to be more in your face and twisted. It's the Joker afterall.
But The Master creeps up on you. You never really know what to expect or what you'll learn about these characters, until little moments like these where their true colors come out.
That's the mystery of
The Master. Nothing is out in the open. Everyone is a riddle.
Joker is way more blunt. It's a damn good movie, but I personally can't separate the two films without being reminded of the other. Both are essentially about lost souls wandering a society that's hostile towards mental illness.
Todd Phillips created a lonely misfit character who is rejected by the society he wants to be part of, but is abused and eventually driven to violence madness.
but Paul Thomas Anderson creates this lonely misfit character that finds his tribe, and realizes that he actually doesn't want to be part of it. in the end, He chooses to be free of a Master.
In the moment mentioned above, Anderson effectively conveyed all of the unbearable and tragic emotions that Freddie feels constantly, with just that ONE Stare. all while Still witholding enough details about his mother and father and all of the other horrors in his life, that way Freddie still remains a mystery to the viewer.
That's great filmmaking.
Freddie is one of my absolute favorite characters in anything. And while i absolutely love Joker, Freddie feels more real. More relatable. More human.
Arthur didn't have a choice but to become Joker. Thus, Joker brcomes his Master.
Freddie is the opposite. I truly believe that Freddie found peace at the end of the film.
It's a sick thing to consider, but both films are essentially about a mentally broken man
finding happiness.

After seeing Better Call Saul, Mike's character shines through, as he really doesn't want any more people to die. Gus is extra cautious now, because he was nearly killed by Lalo Salamanca and his plan for revenge almost being revealed.
Gus cannot risk losing Walt, because his Blue Meth by the point had taken the entire territory over. There's a reason he put Gale back in the lab with Walt, so he can start collecting data on Walt's recipe. This moment changed everything about their relationship. Gus couldn't outright kill him then. He had no other options. It wasn't about the two thugs that were killed, it was about the fact that he couldn't control Walt. He was a half measure.
Gus doesn't deal in half measures. But he made an exception for Walt and Jesse. and those two are who ended up killing him in the end.
worse yet, Walt set it up so Hector Salamanca, the man Gus hated more than anyone, but kept alive just to torment him, would get the last laugh.
Walt ruined everything. Gus's revenge on the Salamancas, and his simultaneous rise as the kingpin, all destroyed by a chemistry teacher.
Walt not only beat Gus at his own game, he humiliated him. I like to think that when Gus steps out of Hector's room after the bomb, that his dying thoughts were,
"no half measures..."
