How, where and when did humanity develop the ability to communicate through the written word? Whom can be credited with 'inventing' the alphabet? What was the original script featured on the Ten Commandments, and in which the Torah was written? In Part One of this new and unprecedented documentary, 'Secrets of the Hebrew Alphabet', Jerusalem Lights' Hillel Richman, archeologist and Biblical researcher, presents a fascinating, scholarly and original exploration of the origins of mankind's alphabet in general, and the Hebrew alphabet in particular.

At the conclusion of our Shiva (seven-day mourning period), we express our profound thanks to all those came to offer their consolation, and to all who sent messages of condolences upon the passing of our sweet daughter Ora of blessed memory. We are very grateful. She was truly an exceptional person and like her name, her life was a ray of light in this world. She was a person who exuded love and caring to everyone. Thank you for your prayers throughout the long ordeal of Ora's valiant struggle. Her courage was a great inspiration. Thanks to everyone who visited during the Shiva and shared beautiful memories and stories of her amazing acts of kindness. She was always there for everyone who sought her friendship, guidance and wisdom. Thanks to her special friends and the entire community of Eish Kodesh, which was so beloved to her and where she was so beloved, who share in our mourning and who celebrate her life.
Like all who, G-d forbid, know the pain of losing a child, we face an uphill battle now, to learn how to live without her. We appreciate your prayers for her husband and six young children. With Hashem's help, her light will continue to illuminate our lives even as her soul rises to the highest heights. As her youngest daughter said, 'if Hashem gave us this challenge, it is because He knows we are up to it.'
We will get back to ourselves and with Hashem's help we shall resume our Jerusalem Lights full broadcasting and Zoom schedule as soon as possible, perhaps slowly at first and perhaps erratically, as we need some time to regroup and take care of the family's needs. We appreciate your understanding and patience as we navigate through this challenging time.
At some point in the near future, with Hashem's help, we hope to establish something in her memory, that will do justice to her memory and bring light to others. Anyone interested in participating in this project is invited to contact us.
Ora left this world on 10 Tammuz. Yesterday we rose up from shiva, and today is 17 Tammuz, the Fast Day which begins the annual Three Week mourning period for the destruction of the Holy Temple. Today, a number of tragic events befell the Jewish people, as recorded in the Mishna, Tractate Ta'anit. One of these events was the breaking of the original tablets of the Ten Commandments, which Moshe realized the people did not deserve.
It is no coincidence that although the tablets of the Ten Commandments were square, they are traditionally depicted with rounded top, in the shape of a heart. Indeed, the breaking of the tablets was like the breaking of our hearts, and Ora's passing breaks our hearts as well. It is also no coincidence that our thirty-day mourning period coincides with the period wherein all of Israel is in mourning for the destruction of the Holy Temple. This period reaches its peak on Tisha B'Av, and ends on the following day, the tenth of Av. That is the also the thirtieth day in our mourning for Ora of blessed memory. So it is as if all of Israel joins us in mourning. But as everyone knows, the mourning for the Holy Temple is not about crying, but about rebuildingā¦it is meant to inspire us to rise up and build. Ora's entire life was dedicated to building up the Land of Israel and raising her family to be proud, selfless and courageous servants of Hashem. We know she will always be with her children and we bless her husband, the most selfless husband and wonderful father, to carry on her work in this world, knowing the joy they are bringing her. As we read in the haftara, the prophetic reading for the Fast Day of 17 Tammuz today, "Thus said the Hashem hosts: The fast of the fourth month, the fast of the fifth month, the fast of the seventh month, and the fast of the tenth month shall be to the house of Judah [days of] gladness and cheerfulness, and happy festivals. But love truth and peace." This verse prophesies a time when the fast days commemorating the destruction of the First and Second Temples will be transformed into days of joy and celebration in the future redemption; when in the messianic era all sorrow will be turned to joy.
With blessings and love,
Rabbi Chaim Richman and family
