Congress’s failure to raise the debt limit has brought the US perilously close to default. Republicans have insisted on major cuts to federal spending –including in healthcare—in exchange for their votes. President Joe Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy worked out an agreement in principle, which gives in, at least partially, to the GOP demands while preserving Democratic priorities.

So what’s the impact of the debt ceiling deal on healthcare? Will the deal have a real impact or is it all just smoke and mirrors? Find out on the latest episode of CareTalk!

Rural healthcare is a challenge.

Rural communities have fewer doctors, nurses and medical facilities per person than the country as a whole.

Some rural hospitals have closed, leaving large geographic areas without local services. And the population is older, sicker, more likely to have unhealthy habits like tobacco use and less likely to have access to reliable transportation to get to their appointments.

But is rural healthcare all doom and gloom?

In the latest episode of CareTalk, John and David weigh in on the rural healthcare crisis.

🎙️What are the health challenges facing rural communities?
🎙️What are the healthcare delivery and financing issues?
🎙️What are the opportunities to improve rural healthcare?

The US is often called a free market #healthcare system. But #Medicare and #Medicaid are the biggest insurers, and the government pays for about half of all healthcare.

The private sector is getting the message, with some big players –like Humana—ignoring private customers altogether.

Are we on a one way train to single payer? Will innovation suffer? And if government pays all the bills, should it own all the #hospitals, physician practices and drug companies, too?

In this episode of #CareTalk, John Driscoll and David E. Williams share how they feel about the government being the main customer for healthcare.
