🎥 Behind the Scenes: My Filmmaking Gear
A lot of you have asked about the equipment I use to capture my 4K HDR nature films, so here’s a peek into my toolkit!:
📷 Cameras
Sony A1
This is my camera for 8K videos. The detail it captures is incredible, and it gives me tons of flexibility when I’m editing.
Sony A9 III
I use this one mostly for wildlife because of its animal eye autofocus. It’s a total game changer, it locks onto an animal’s eye even if it’s moving fast.
Atomos Ninja Ultra
When filming, I use the Atomos Ninja Ultra as an HDR monitor, which helps me see exactly how the footage will look in high dynamic range. It’s also a ProRes recorder, and I use it with a 1TB SSD to capture high-quality files directly in the field.
🔭 Lenses
Sony 70-200mm GM
A versatile lens that I can use for many different kinds of shots. This lens is extremely SHARP.
Sony 100-400mm GM
Great for wildlife when I need more reach but still want flexibility.
Sony 200-600mm
My go-to for long-range animal shots. Perfect for capturing distant wildlife without disturbing them.
Sony 90mm Macro
For macro work, close-ups of tiny details like flowers, insects, or textures in nature.
Sony Zeiss 35mm f/1.4
I mainly use this one for aquariums. It gives me gorgeous, bright, and clean shots, even in lower light.
Sony Zeiss 16-35mm
This is my wide-angle lens for landscapes.
🎙 Audio
Zoom H3-VR
I use this for surround sound recordings. It captures immersive audio so you feel like you’re standing right in the environment.
Zoom H4n Pro
This one is for stereo recording. It’s reliable and crisp, perfect for capturing clean natural sounds. I mostly use it to record bird sounds.
💻 Editing
Mac Pro (2016)
This machine handles my heavy HDR workflows. It’s loaded with 2x Radeon Pro Vega II Duo GPUs (that’s 4 GPUs in total!) which makes playback and rendering smooth.
Apple Pro Display XDR (x2)
I use two of these displays for true HDR editing. They let me see the real colors and brightness as they’re meant to be viewed.
MacBook Pro
When I’m editing on the go, I use my MacBook Pro. Its built-in XDR screen also lets me see HDR properly, which makes it great for portable grading.
iPad Pro (OLED)
I use this as an extra monitor, especially for checking perfect blacks with HDR content. It helps me make sure the dark areas look just right.
DaVinci Resolve
All my videos are edited and color graded in DaVinci Resolve. It’s the best software for HDR workflows, letting me fine-tune every detail of color, light, and contrast.
Blackmagic Keyboard
I use the DaVinci Resolve Editor Keyboard for editing. The jog wheel and dedicated shortcut keys speed up my workflow and make cutting footage much more efficient.
Blackmagic Mini Panel
For color grading, I use the Blackmagic Mini Panel. Having physical controls for lift, gamma, gain, and curves makes HDR grading far more precise and intuitive than using just a mouse.
Do you have any questions about cameras, lenses, or editing tools I use? Feel free to ask in the comments, I enjoy chatting about the technical side of my films :)
