What I've been Listening to, Reading and Watching

Iā€™m currently reading the Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt which is really interesting. I have been distracted by politics which I have a keen interest in, as there has been a huge amount of news including an attempted assassination of a former and possible next President the USA and the Paris Olympics has just finished.

Shantaram (tv series on Apple TV)

This is a really interesting series following a man (played by Charlie Hunnam) who escapes from prison in Australia and ends up in Bombay. (This is from a book set in 1982 so it was called Bombay at the time).
It is a story of self discovery, a man who has made some huge mistakes in his life but at the core he wants to be a good person and do the right thing. He cares about his fellow man. In a place with stark wealth and stark poverty like Bombay, with lots of corruption and different values, what is the right thing? It is not as obvious as you may think. Corruption, navigating right and wrong in corrupt systems and redemption are the overarching themes.

Ultimately it is a good story, his complex relationships with the locals, humbling experiences and learning that all actions have consequences, however well intended, most especially when living on the edge in places like the slums, where many preventable deaths are an everyday occurrence and fact of life.

It also looks at the concept of forgiveness, can you forgive yourself, do you need to pay for your sins and how do you know when you have paid (if not completing a prison sentence). I havenā€™t read the book which I hear is better (as is usually the case) however I enjoyed the series. It gave me a lot to think about.

Kate Miller-Heidke (Penrith and Parramatta)

I went to another two Kate Miller-Heidke gigs and as usual, I really enjoyed them (Iā€™ve been to over 100 KMH gigs now). Kate is a phenomenal singer and performer, she is also very funny and a great story teller in and between songs. Kate and her husband Keir are the perfect duo on stage; they play off each other and are mesmerising to watch. They are also world class songwriters.

On this tour they had the lovely Georgia Mooney as their support act (and backup singer for some of their set). Georgia is also very talented and tells lovely stories in her performance. She is well worth looking up online, she has not long ago released her first album and is more well known as a member of the band All My Exes Live in Texas.

These two beautiful nights of live music are what fills my cup.

What I've been watching:

The New Look (Apple TV)
The story of how fashion icon and his contemporaries including Coco Chanel navigate the horrors of World War II and launch modern fashion. This was a beautiful series, very moving and so beautifully shot. Ben Mendelsohn, Maisie Williams and Juliette Binoche lead a brilliant cast. This was a really interesting look at Paris during and post war. The beauty and the horror. A great reminder of the atrocities that happened during the war and why we need to not repeat history!

A Gentleman in Moscow (Paramount)
Based on the 2016 novel by Amor Towles, "A Gentleman in Moscow" is set against the backdrop of post-Revolutionary Russia. Another beautifully shot and moving series. A great cast led by Ewan McGregor. Again, the beauty and the horror and a stark reminder that we need to remember our history and not repeat it!

Martha Wainwright live in concert (Blue Mountains Theatre)
On the weekend I went to see Martha Wainwright, I really enjoyed it; she also read 2 or 3 excerpts from her autobiography and played the related songs. A mix of old and new songs, mostly originals and some covers (Tom Waits, Kate McGarrigle and Rufus Wainwright). Martha is real and raw and has been exploring the process of rebirth and finding joy after enduring much pain. I definitely plan to read her autobiography soon.

Post Easter Reminder:

It is easy to feel overwhelmed and guilty after all the Easter chocolate and hot cross buns over the weekend. Always remember you made whatever choices you made about food over Easter. None of those choices make you good, bad or otherwise. Just move on, focus on your next choice.

Choose to nourish yourself most of the time; you're worth taking care of

What Iā€™ve been listening to and watching

Concert: Pink, live in Townsville
I had a great time on a short getaway with my sister and cousin, Pink was fabulous as usual. The whole town was celebrating Pink so it was a really fun concert and really good vibe.

AudioBook: Bad Therapy: While kids arenā€™t growing up by Abigail Shrier

Gen Z's mental health is worse than that of previous generations. What has gone wrong with our youth? In Bad Therapy, bestselling investigative journalist Abigail Shrier argues that the problem isn't the kids - it's the mental health experts....

This book may be controversial however I believe it is vitally important we have these conversations. It is American centric, however much of what she talks about is happening in Australia or on its way.

If you have kids, I highly recommend you read this and join the conversation.

Audiobook: Weā€™ve got Issues: How you can stand strong for Americaā€™s Soul and Sanity by Dr Phil McGraw
I love that Dr Phil is standing up for sanity in a crazy world. Although this is based on the situation in America, much of it relates to Australia so it is still really relatable. I think western countries like the USA, Australia and the UK are going through an identity crisis. We are under attack by extremists at the fringes who put ideology before sanity and stoke division for their own gain....

This is a great read.

Podcast: Triggernomentry episode, 18 March, Inside the Bubble of Public Broadcasting - Josh Szeps
Josh Szeps in an Australian journalist and TV presenter who recently left his weekend breakfast show on ABC news. He now hosts Uncomfortable Conversations (a podcast) and discusses the issue of echo chambers and division in this episode. I found it really interesting.

What I've been watching/attending:

Konstantin Kisin and Tony Abbot speak at Sydney University

I attended this talk in the Great Hall of Sydney University. I particularly wanted to see Konstantin as I have been following him and his podcast Triggernometry for a while and have recently read his book, An Immigrants Love Letter to the West. This was a really interesting hour, including a Q&A.
Konstantin was born in the Soviet Union, moving to the UK at around 12 years old, he was previously a comedian and had identified as a leftist politically (he now describes himself as politically non binary). Konstantin has a great way of packaging important information in a mix of real world experience and anecdotes along with humour.
There was a group of students protesting outside which was fine (a great example of free speech), except when they try to bash down the doors in that beautiful old building. It is a shame they didnā€™t want to come in and listen and ask questions, they would have learned something.
He talked about where political correctness originated (the Soviet Union) and the importance of freedom of expression, as we need to speak to think. This is the bedrock of our success in the west. I highly recommend his book (and his podcast) where he goes into much more detail peppered with really interesting historic facts and personal stories.

One Day (series on Netflix)

It was a lovely enjoyable romance, coming of age story; however it is a tragic romance so have your tissues handy!

The Sound of Freedom (Amazon Prime)

This is a harrowing true story, while people are getting their knickers in a knot over stuff that just doesnā€™t matter in the western world, nobody wants to talk about the child trafficking happening all over the world. This is a really important film, well worth watching (even though it is such a challenging topic).
This is the advertised synopsis:

After rescuing a boy from ruthless child traffickers, a federal agent learns the boy's sister is still captive and decides to embark on a dangerous mission to save her. With time running out, he quits his job and journeys deep into the Colombian jungle, putting his life on the line to free her from a fate worse than death.

Alex Lloyd live at The Joan in Penrith

I was very grateful to get to go an Alex Lloyd gig on Saturday night, his music feels like revisiting my youth, I have always been a big fan and his voice is better than ever. No boring songs, every song I loved.
Live music fills my cup.

What I have been watching and listening to:

Itā€™s been a while so I have consumed lots media in that time (so this is not just a week)!

The Greatest Night in Pop (Netflix)

I was a teenager when Bob Geldof first alerted the word to the people starving on Africa. As a huge fan of music I was well aware of the UK based Band Aid song (Do they know itā€™s Christmas?) and then the US project, We are the World. Both sung by many of the biggest superstars of the time.
I really enjoyed this; it was good to see how this song came together. This is a feel good and particularly interesting if you are a music fan. I was also sad as a few of those musicians have passed away, going down memory road is bittersweet like that.

Something that Lionel Ritchie said right at the end got my attention and made me cry. Ritchie was quoting something his dad used to say to him: ā€œEnjoy coming home because thereā€™s gonna come a time when you canā€™t go home. The house will be there ā€“ the people in the house wonā€™t be thereā€.

Boy Swallows Universe (Netflix)

I have not read the book, however I really enjoyed this series. Based in Brisbane in the 80s, (even though Iā€™m from Sydney) I recognised the Australia of my childhood. It is a tough story that unfortunately is real for many kids, growing up with parents who have drug or alcohol addictions and criminal behaviour. This is set from the kids point of view, just trying to survive in that world. A world where the adults around you constantly let you down and there actions or lack thereof cause trauma over and over for their kids. It is a reminder that the child in a classroom who is dirty, behaving badly or not keeping up may be dealing with a huge amount of adult responsibilities. The acting is superb, especially from the young actors.

Iā€™ve also been listening a lot of these podcasts: Triggernometry, Modern Wisdom and Andrew Gold Heretics. I am really interested in culture, why people do what they do health and politics.

I was also lucky enough to see Bananaland the fun musical created by Keir Nuttall and Kate Miller-Heidke and see Kate (and Keir) live twice and get my fill of live music for a little while. Live music and theatre fill my cup.
