Since releasing this video, conscription has seriously re-entered the discourse in several European countries, with Croatia being the latest to declare its intention to bring back mandatory military service. Freshly-defeated British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak took a promise to reintroduce compulsory military service into that election, and the USA has passed a law automatically enrolling young men into the Selective Service System - which will make any subsequent draft much easier to administer.
It has been by far my least popular video and I can only guess why, but I do guess that it's because it's seen as an idea from a previous time that has no bearing on the present. But it's much easier to interrogate these ideas from a cool-headed distance than it would be in the face of an expanded conflict. These things can creep in easily, escalate radically without consideration, and suddenly have catastrophic consequences that were never considered or consented to.
Let me know if there's anything you'd like me to look at next, I'll run a poll, but I've written a few scripts on Australia's cultural weakness, the laziness of democracy and the Olympics. But I'm really open to producing anything that you're excited to see, it's hard to keep the motivation with a view count that's probably 30% my parents.
