April, 1945. At Ohrdruf, Germany, American soldiers liberated their first concentration camp. Over the coming weeks, they would discover many more. A week after its liberation, Allied commanders visited Ohrdruf, to witness with their own eyes. The horrors he saw made George Patton vomit. Dwight Eisenhower was there, and would later write: ‘The things I saw beggar description...The visual evidence and the verbal testimony of starvation, cruelty, and bestiality were so overpowering as to leave me a bit sick. I made the visit deliberately, in order to be in a position to give first-hand evidence if ever….in the future…there develops a tendency to charge these allegations merely to ‘propaganda.’
