I just got my just got my Blue Belt… BJJ changed my life BUT…

about 8 weeks ago, I found out I had a bulging disc in my neck and haven’t been able to train since. (Maybe you’ve seen me wearing a neck brace on some posts)

It’s the result of years of boxing, bad posture from sitting at a computer for hours every day, and the wear and tear of BJJ training.

It’s been so tough adjusting life to this compared to how I was living before.

I was training BJJ 5-6 days a week for months and had completely fallen in love with the sport.

Training with Marcelino Freitasat in Melbourne since May was something I looked forward to every day.

Not being able to train, and losing a lot of strength and size in the right side of my upper body, has been mentally tough.

Today, for the first time in 8 weeks, I put my Gi back on.

Last week Marcelino told me to come to the grading and put my gi on…

He said some very kind things about me and awarded me my Blue Belt

I had to hold back tears, as my emotions were all over the place…this means so much to me

I don’t know when I’ll be able to train BJJ again or if I’ll even be able to, but I’m hopeful. šŸ¤ž

If you train BJJ, you know how hard it is to earn a blue belt, especially when your coach is a world-class competitor like Marcelino
I’m really proud of this life accomplishment.

I just want to thank everyone at Marcelino Freitas JiuJitsu gym for all the help, support, and making it such a pleasure to train there.

I also want to give a big shoutout to my amazing wife Sarah

At the start of the year, her goal was to get 1 stripe before turning 40 (on December 6th), and now she has 2 stripes!

I have no idea what’s going to happen next for me in this BJJ journey but it’s going to be a big part of my family’s life forever, I know this.

I’m working on getting stronger everyday .

I moved to Los Angeles in 2012, aged 27, after retiring from boxing due to hand injuries.I went for a job interview to be a trainer at a gym chain just outside of Beverly Hills.

I was so nervous—this was my first job interview EVER.

I dressed smartly in trousers and a shirt; my palms were sweaty.

Along with my certificates, I also brought my Olympic medal.

I went into the interview, and the gym manager never shook my hand, which I thought was strange.

He sat at his desk with his feet up and kept putting his hands behind his head as he leaned back on his chair.

He made me feel small as if he looked down on me.

I was very polite. I told him about my experience in training and how much I would love to work at this gym, and how dedicated I was.

He didn’t seem that bothered.

I pulled out my Olympic medal, thinking it would impress him a bit.

But he didn’t even take his feet off the table or look at it.

My first thought was,
ā€œShit, the Olympics must not be big in the USA.ā€

I told the guy that other than training their members, I could help build a boxing program at the gym.

Again, he wasn’t interested.

A week after the interview, I followed up with a nice email.

He replied and said they gave the job to someone else.

I was devastated.
I felt hopeless.
I didn’t know what I was going to do.

I had dedicated my life to boxing from the age of 10 through 27 Now what?

I can’t even get a job in a gym
But a week later I found a place in West LA that did boxing classes.

They offered me a job as soon as they knew my background.

I was only getting $10 an hour for teaching classes, but I didn’t mind—it gave me a purpose & some money.
People loved training with me.

I started getting clients.

The gym split the training revenue with the trainers, allowing me to keep 60% of the money I brought in from personal training, while the gym took 40%, which was fine.

But after a couple of months, the gym decided to switch this and start taking 60% giving me only 40%.
I wasn’t happy about that..

Even though I’d only been there 2 months, I knew a lot of people loved training with me from teaching classes.
So I left!

I started a boot camp at Santa Monica Beach with another trainer, who left the same gym for the same reason.

The boot camp grew, big fast

It was at this point I wanted a gym.

Location, so I put all the money I had left from boxing (around $35k)

into an empty warehouse in Santa Monica to start a boxing fitness gym that we called Box N Burn.

Fast forward two years later in 2014, and the gym was packed

One night, even 72 people showed up for a class 😮

The boxing classes were the best around.

Men’s Fitness did an article on the best gyms in the USA and named Box N Burn #1 in California and #3 in the USA.
I couldn’t bloody believe it...

What was funny is that when I read the article, one of the first things that popped into my head was the guy who interviewed me, that nervous young retired boxer.

So, yes, I emailed him the article and said, ā€œHey mate, remember me…?ā€

I might have said some other things I’ll not repeat too šŸ™‚
He didn’t reply šŸ˜…

Soon after, we opened a 2nd location, and the gyms were doing multiple 7 figures a year, and my personal training was multiple 6 figures ... mate there was no one more shocked at this than me.

Fast forward another 10 years to now.

I own www.BoxingFitness.Com, the worldwide leader in boxing education.

For years, I’ve been passing on my knowledge and systems to other people so they can succeed in teaching boxing for fitness.

Australian National Championships 🤯

This just happened..but it nearly didn’t

You know why? Because I was scared

Scared to lose

Scared to get hurt

Scared to not be the ā€œbig strong Daddaā€ to my 3 little girls

Scared people would say things like, ā€œI thought that guy was an Olympic athlete, look at the state of himā€

Scared of embarrassing my self

Scared of the criticism if I got submitted

After all, I was going to ā€œfightā€ men who have been training on how to choke out the person in front of them

Thoughts like, ā€œWhy am I doing this? My fighting days are over,ā€ kept popping into my head

Why am I putting my ā€œreputationā€ on the line to do this? It didn’t make any sense

But because of all these negative thoughts, and the stuff I preach in my videos, I knew I had to do this!

You know, in life, the easiest thing to do is play it safe

Or tell yourself, ā€œI’m not ready, maybe next yearā€

I came to terms with the fact that I might lose

But if I backed out (which I felt like doing), I wouldn’t be okay with that.

That’s not the type of Dad I wanna be, or the person I wanna be

But the only way to grow is by getting out of the comfort zone

The last time I stood on a podium was 16 years ago at the Beijing Olympic Games šŸ„‰at the same weight I am today.

The last time I competed in Aus šŸ‡¦šŸ‡ŗwas 18 year ago at the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games, and I didn’t make it to the podium.

Well, last week I did something crazy—I entered the Australian National Championships of BJJ, held in Melbourne, and I won the bloody GOLD medal šŸ„‡!

My advice, don’t let FEAR stop you from being the person you want to be… if I listened to them negative thoughts today would be an ordinary day, but now I’ve achieved something I never thought I would ever be able to do.

Success lies on the other side of fear.

Thanks to my wife ‪@NurseSarahJeffries‬ this is not possible without you.

When I got off the mat after winning the final, I cried my eyes out & don’t know why,it was so strangešŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™‚ļø

Video coming in the near future.
