Iron Sukkah System

The common denominator of the laws of building a sukkah is to cement in us the correct relationship between the dimension of the physical and the dimension of the spirit. We sit in Sukkot – not in an open space or in a fortress – but in a temporary tent; an intermediate reality that internalizes in us the idea that spiritual resilience is the root of physical strength; that the qualitative dimension is the basis of the quantitative dimension.

Control of the imagination is a derivative of this outlook: a sensual and quantitative view tends to exaggerate and every threat seems to be "the end of the world". That's why media and visual communication channels almost always inflate threats. An abstract and qualitative view, on the other hand, analyzes the threat intellectually and looks at it in the correct proportion.

For years we have been hearing that a war against Hezbollah would shut down life in Israel (does everyone have a reservoir of mineral water at home?); that Iran is an invincible threat; that anarchists are the majority; that the coronavirus pandemic is the end of the world and that Saddam Hussein will throw chemical missiles at us.

Sukkot teaches us not to underestimate any tangible threat and to be prepared for the worst; however, it always turns out that the danger is not as bad as it seems. The good is stronger than the bad; quality trumps quantity. Above us there is always the iron sukkah system – "Tzila d'mhimnota" – the shadow of faith that protects us and leads us to the good.

מערכת סוכת ברזל

המכנה המשותף להלכות בניית סוכה היא לקבע בנו את היחס הנכון שבין ממד החומר לבין ממד הרוח. אנו יושבים בסוכות - לא בחלל הפתוח ולא במבצר - אלא באוהל ארעי; מציאות ביניים שמפנימה בנו את הרעיון שהחוסן הרוחני הוא השורש לחוסן הפיסי; שהממד האיכותי הוא הבסיס לממד האיכותי.

אחת הנגזרות לכך היא השליטה בדמיונות: מבט חושני וכמותי נוטה להגזמות וכל איום נדמה לו כ"סוף העולם". זו הסיבה שהתקשורת והמדיה החזותית כמעט תמיד מנפחות איומים יותר ממה שהם. מבט מופשט ואיכותי לעומת זאת, מנתח שכלית את האיום ומביט עליו בפרופורציה נכונה.

במשך שנים אנו שומעים שמלחמה מול החיזבאללה תשבית את החיים בישראל (לכולם יש מאגר של מים מינרלים בבית?); שאיראן היא איום שלא ניתן לנצח אותו; שהאנרכיסטים הם הרוב; שמגפת הקורונה היא סוף העולם ושסדאם חוסיין ישליך עלינו טילים כימיים.

חג סוכות מלמד אותנו לא לזלזל בשום איום מוחשי ולהיות ערוכים לגרוע מכל; אולם תמיד מתברר שהשד פחות גרוע ממה שהוא נדמה. הטוב יותר חזק מהרע; האיכות מנצחת את הכמות. יש תמיד מעלינו את מערכת סוכת ברזל– "צילא דמהימנותא" – צל האמונה שסוכך עלינו ומוביל אותנו אל הטוב.

Say It Out Loud

Yom Kippur is the only day of the year when we say out loud the words, "Baruch Shem", Blessed [is His] Name Whose glorious majesty is forever and ever. Our Sages explain this in contrast to the reading of the "Shema", Hear, Israel, the Lord is our God, the Lord is one", which is always said out loud, and expresses a clear confirmation of God's unity in the world, the "Baruch Shem" expresses a lesser pronouncement of Divine Providence ("glorious majesty") and is therefore whispered quietly all year round. On Yom Kippur, on the other hand, it is possible to identify the fingerprints of God's leadership in the world more clearly and therefore we say it out loud.

On Yom Kippur this year, the choice facing each and every one of us is how to say, "Baruch Shem Kevod Malchuto Lolam Vaed". There are those who may whisper it softly or not say at all, since for them, the glorious majesty of the Holy One, blessed be He, was not seen in the past year.

On the other hand, there are those who will say loud and clear: " Blessed [is His] Name Whose glorious majesty is forever and ever!" Last year, on the eve of Yom Kippur 5784, while the monsters were growing across the border and the suffocating noose was tightening, the State of Israel was in a national coma. spiritual culture was in confusion until a handful of violent bullies imagined that they had public legitimacy to prevent prayer in the streets of Tel Aviv.

Today, on the eve of Yom Kippur 5785, we are in a completely different place: on the security level, the monster was exposed and decisively beaten; the stranglehold is loosening and victory is just over the horizon. On the internal level, traditionalism has grown so much this year that even the High Court of Justice is in alignment with the public mood interested in Jewish prayer.

The battle is not yet over on all fronts, but the identification of God's glorious majesty is sharp and clear. Therefore, this year we will shout as loudly as possible – even in the streets of Tel Aviv – " Blessed [is His] Name Whose glorious majesty is forever and ever!"

יום כיפורים הוא הוא היום היחיד בשנה שבו אנו אומרים בקול רם את המילים "ברוך שם כבוד מלכותו לעולם ועד". חז"ל מסבירים שבניגוד לקריאה הרמה "שמע ישראל ה' אלוקינו ה' אחד" שמבטאת אבחנה ברורה באחדות ה' בעולם – הרי "ברוך שם כבוד מלכותו לעולם ועד" מבטאת אבחנה חלשה יותר של ההשגחה האלוקית ("כבוד מלכות") ולכן נאמרת כל השנה בלחש. לעומת זאת, ביום הכיפורים ניתן לזהות בצורה ברורה יותר את טביעות האצבע של הנהגת ה' בעולם ולכן אנו אומרים זאת בקול רם.

ביום כיפורים השנה עומדת הבחירה בפני כל אחד ואחת כיצד לומר "ברוך שם כבוד מלכותו לעולם ועד"? ישנם כאלה שאולי ילחשו אותה חרישית או לא יאמרו בכלל כי מבחינתם כבוד מלכותו של הקדוש ברוך הוא לא נראה בשנה האחרונה.

לעומתם, ישנם כאלה שיאמרו בקול רם וברור: "ברוך שם כבוד מלכותו לעולם ועד!" לפני שנה, בערב יום הכיפורים תשפ"ד, בזמן שהמפלצות גדלו מעבר לגבול וטבעת החנק הלכה והתהדקה, מדינת ישראל הייתה שרויה בתרדמת לאומית; התרבות הרוחנית הייתה מצויה בבלבול עד שקומץ אלים דמיין שיש לו לגיטימציה ציבורית למנוע תפילה כהלכתה בחוצות תל אביב.

כיום, ערב יום הכיפורים תשפ"ה אנו נמצאים במקום שונה לחלוטין: במישור הבטחוני המפלצת נחשפה והוכתה שוק על ירך; טבעת החנק הולכת ומשתחררת והניצחון מעבר לאופק. במישור הפנימי - המסורתיות כה התגברה בשנה זו עד שאפילו בג"ץ מיישר קו עם הלך הרוח הציבורי שמעוניין בתפילה יהודית.

המערכה לא הסתיימה עדיין בכל החזיתות, אבל הזיהוי של כבוד מלכותו של ה' הוא חד וברור; ולכן השנה נצעק הכי חזק שאפשר – גם בחוצות תל אביב – "ברוך שם כבוד מלכותו לעולם ועד!"

Atone for the (Mis)conception

Yom Kippur has been designated by the Jewish people as a day of atonement for the "sin of the golden calf". The sin of the golden calf is not just bowing down to an idol, it is a code name for fixation on a premise (concept). Instead of opening up to greatness that demands constant improvement, the people of Israel danced around a "golden statue," fixated around a glittering, "circular" comfort zone that can be leaned on, forgetting about Moses who ascended Mount Sinai; in our words: the (mis)conception.

Each and every generation has its golden calf. In modern times, the sin of the golden calf is expressed in addiction to human power and abandonment of religion; in our postmodern era, faith in human ability has also been abandoned; the golden calf today means to wallow in despair and attempt to suppress everything that resembles greatness and meaning.

Each generation has its own (mis)conception and a "Yom Kippur War" for which they must atone: in the Yom Kippur War fifty years ago, the concept was a sense of "my power and the might of my hand" and disregard for the enemy's strength. On October 7th, the concept was not necessarily national power but a progressive worldview that bows to weakness; the self-conviction that there is no chance of defeating the enemy and the era of wars has passed. The illusion that Hamas is interested in quiet, and that the main challenges facing the IDF are the purity of arms and the climate crisis.

This year's Yom Kippur fasting and prayers are coming to atone for the sin of the golden calf of 2024, not of 1973. This year's Yom Kippur soul-searching must not deteriorate into a left-wing style of weakness: "it's been proven that the IDF is worthless and the only solution is peace"; on the contrary: this year's soul-searching is that we did not believe in the power hidden in the people of Israel, that we inflated the threat much more than it is, and were afraid to attack the axis of evil that is now revealed as a paper tiger.

On Yom Kippur 5785 we will atone for the golden calf of our generation, for not trusting in ourselves; on this Yom Kippur of the Victory Generation, we pray to God to "atone for Your people Israel" – and then no one can overcome us!

לכפר על הקונספציה

יום הכיפורים נקבע בעם ישראל לדורות כיום כפרה על "חטא העגל". חטא העגל אינו רק השתחוות לפסל אלא שם קוד להתקבעות בהנחת מוצא (קונספט). במקום להיפתח לגודל שתובע שיפור מתמיד, עם ישראל רוקד סביב "פסל זהב", מתקבע סביב אזור נוחות נוצץ ו"מעגלי" שניתן להתרפק עליו ולשכוח את משה שעלה להר סיני; במילים שלנו: קונספציה.

לכל דור ודור יש את עגל הזהב שלו. בעת המודרנית חטא עגל הזהב התבטא בהתמכרות לכוח האנושי ולזניחת הדת; בעת הפוסטמודרנית שלנו נזנח גם האמון ביכולת האנושית, עגל הזהב כיום הוא ההתבוססות בייאוש וניסיון להדחיק כל מה שמזכיר גודל ומשמעות.

לכל דור יש את הקונספציה ו"מלחמת יום הכיפורים" שלו שעליהן יש לכפר: במלחמת יום הכיפורים לפני חמישים שנה הקונספציה הייתה תחושת "כוחי ועוצם ידי" וזלזול בכוחו של האויב. בשביעי באוקטובר הקונספציה הייתה לאו דווקא כוחנות לאומית אלא תפיסת עולם פרוגרסיבית שמשתחווה לחולשה; שכנוע עצמי שאין סיכוי להכריע את האויב ועידן המלחמות עבר מן העולם. האשליה שהחמאס מעוניין בשקט והאתגרים המרכזיים שעומדים בפני צה"ל הם טוהר הנשק ומשבר האקלים.

הצום והתפילות של יום כיפורים השנה באים לכפר על חטא העגל של 2024 ולא של 1973. אסור שחשבון הנפש של יום הכיפורים השנה יתדרדר להחלשה בסגנון השמאל "הוכח שצה"ל לא שווה כלום והפתרון היחיד הוא שלום"; הפוך: חשבון הנפש השנה הוא על כך על כך שלא האמנו בכוח שגנוז בעם ישראל, על כך שניפחנו את האיום הרבה יותר ממה שהוא ופחדנו לתקוף את ציר הרשע שמתגלה כעת כנמר של נייר.

ביום כיפורים תשפ"ה אנו מכפרים על עגל הזהב של דורנו, על אי האמון בעצמנו; ביום כיפורים זה של דור הניצחון אנו מתפללים "כפר לעמך ישראל" – ואז אין אף אחד שיכול עלינו!

Good Signs for a Good New Year

Masechet Kritut is the source of the Rosh Hashana evening custom of eating simanim (literally signs or indicators) are a series of symbolic foods each followed by a specific blessing. "Abaye said, "Now that you have said that a sign is a [correct] matter, one should accustom themself to eating them [squash, beans, leeks, beets and dates] on Rosh Hashanah".

The signs are not mysticism but the identification of God's "fingerprints" in the world. When we taste the apple with honey, we recognize that there is sweetness in the world of the Holy One, Blessed be He, and we are filled with the desire to taste it; when we eat a lot of pomegranate seeds, we internalize that there is a multiplicity of merits in our world and we become part of it; and so on. It is no coincidence that Abaye is the one who teaches us the secret of signs. He was an orphan who was an Amora; Abaye, spelt in Hebrew Abyy, is an acronym for the Hebrew ("asher bicha yerucham yatom", in you God an orphan finds mercy); precisely those who experienced orphanhood and suffering who are better able to recognize the signs of God’s goodness; to know that God is surely found in even the most concealed of concealed places.

The year 5784 unfortunately began with bad signs; we experienced one of the greatest disasters in our history, there are many orphans among us; but the year is ending with good signs. Whichever way we look, the good signs are multiplying as we approach the year 5785– the IDF is winning; the axis of evil turns out to be a hollow monster; and the future consequences go beyond the rosiest imaginings; a new order.

סימנים טובים לשנה טובה

המקור למנהג אכילת הסימנים בליל ראש השנה הוא מסכת כריתות: "אמר אביי: השתא דאמרת סימנא מילתא היא - יהא רגיל איניש למיכל ריש שתא" [עכשיו שאמרת שלסימנים יש ממשות יהיה רגיל אדם לאכול אותם בראש השנה].

הסימנים אינם מיסטיקה אלא זיהוי של "טביעות האצבע" של אלוקים בעולם. כשאנו טועמים את התפוח בדבש אנו מזהים שיש מתיקות בעולמו של הקדוש ברוך הוא ומתמלאים ברצון לטעום זאת; כשאנו אוכלים הרבה גרגרי רימון אנו מפנימים שיש ריבוי זכויות בעולם שלנו והופכים להיות חלק מכך; וכן הלאה. לא במקרה מי שמלמד אותנו את סוד הסימנים הוא אביי, אמורא שהיה יתום ("אשר בך ירוחם יתום" ראשי תיבות אב"יי); דווקא מי שחווה יתמות וסבל מסוגל יותר לזהות את סימני הטוב של אלוקים; לדעת שאפילו בהסתרה שבתוך הסתרה בוודאי נמצא שם ה' יתברך.

שנת תשפ"ד התחילה לצערנו בסימנים לא טובים; חווינו את אחד האסונות הגדולים בתולדתנו, מסתובבת בקרבנו הרבה יתמות; אולם השנה מסתיימת בסימנים טובים. מכל כיוון שאליו נביט הסימנים הטובים מתרבים לקראת שנת תשפ"ה – צה"ל מנצח; ציר הרשע מתברר כמפלצת חלולה; וההשלכות העתידיות הן מעבר לדמיונות הוורודים ביותר; סדר חדש.

אחד מפיוטי ראש השנה "עת שערי רצון להיפתח" (הידוע יותר בכינויו "העוקד, הנעקד והמזבח") חובר בידי רבי יהודה אבן עבאס ממרוקו לפני כתשע מאות שנה. רבי יהודה ואשתו חנה היו עריריים שנים רבות עד שנולד להם בן יחיד – שמואל. הם תלו בו את כל תקוותיהם אולם הוא "נחטף" בידי המוסלמים והתאסלם. רבי יהודה נפגש עימו וניסה לשכנעו שיחזור בו אולם ללא תוצאות; ולאחר מספר ימים נפטר משברון לב. את כל כאבו הכניס רבי יהודה מילות הפיוט שמתאר את תחושותיו של אברהם אבינו בלכתו אל ניסיון העקידה:

עֵת שַׁעֲרֵי רָצוֹן לְהִפָּתֵחַ;
יוֹם אֶהְיֶה כַפַּי לְאֵל שׁוֹטֵחַ;
אָנָּא זְכֹר נָא לִי בְּיוֹם הוֹכֵחַ;
עוֹקֵד וְהַנֶּעְקָד וְהַמִּזְבֵּחַ;

וַיְהִי מְאוֹר יוֹמָם בְּעֵינָם לַיִל;
וַהְמוֹן דְּמָעָיו נוֹזְלִים בַּחַיִל;
עַיִן בְּמַר בּוֹכָה וְלֵב שָׂמֵחַ;
עוֹקֵד וְהַנֶּעְקָד וְהַמִּזְבֵּחַ.

בעם ישראל לאורך כל הדורות נדרשו היהודים לעמוד בעקידת יצחק, לדעת שלא משנה איזה מחיר פרטי נשלם - נצח ישראל לא ישקר ולא ינחם. גם כיום, כל אבא ואמא ששולחים את בניהם לצה"ל מרגישים בדרך ללשכת גיוס "עַיִן בְּמַר בּוֹכָה וְלֵב שָׂמֵחַ", אבל הם יודעים שיש "עוֹקֵד", יש "נֶּעְקָד" ויש "מִּזְבֵּחַ".

בזכות כל העקידות הללו אנו רואים את התשועות מול עינינו בימים אלו: בזכות לומדי התורה ומשרתי הצבא; בזכות הנשים ששולחות כעת את בעליהם למילואים; בזכות כל התפילות, הסליחות והפיוטים – אנחנו מנצחים!

The Binding of Isaac by the Mor Family and the Families of Fallen Heroes

One of the piyutim for Rosh Hashana “Eit Shaarei Ratzon Lehipate'ach” [It is the time for the gates of acceptance to be opened], better known as the “Oked, hane'ekad vehamizbe'ach” [the one who bound, the bound and the altar] was composed by Rabbi Yehuda ben Shmuel Ibn Abas of Morocco around 900 years ago. Rabbi Yehuda and his wife Chana were childless for many years until their only son, Shmuel, was born. They pinned all their hopes on him, but he was "kidnapped" by the Moslems and converted to Islam. Rabbi Yehuda met with him and tried to convince him to retract his decision, but was not successful; and he died of a broken heart several days later. Rabbi Yehuda put all his pain into the words of the piyut that describes our father Avraham's feelings on the way to the attempted Akeidat Yitzchak [sacrifice of Isaac]:

[It is the] time for the gates of acceptance to be opened,
The day I shall be with prostrate palms before God.
Please, remember for me on the day of rebuke —
[Recall] the binder, the bound, and the altar.

And the light of days was night in their eyes,
And multitudes of tears were flowing in strength.
The eye was crying bitterly, and a happy heart.
[Recall] the binder, the bound, and the altar.

The Jewish people throughout the generations have had to make the sacrifice of Isaac, to know that no matter what the personal cost is, the Eternity of Israel, will not lie and will not regret. Even today, every father and mother who sends their sons to the IDF has "an eye crying bitterly, and a happy heart" on their way to the recruitment office, but they know that there is an "oked" [the one who is binding] there is a "ne'ekad" [one who is bound] and there is a "mizbe'ach" [altar].

Thanks to all these sacrifices, we see the salvation before our eyes these days: thanks to Torah scholars and those serving in the military; thanks to the women who now sending their husbands to the reserves; thanks to all the prayers, selichot and piyutim – we are winning!
