Hey VitaPeeps 🩺 As PBS Weathered host Maiya May explains in our recent episode (🔗 https://youtu.be/8mQllQnJrhg?si=nrkjn..., climate change is intensifying the underlying conditions that lead to more and bigger wildfires. Wildfire smoke can have terrible effects on the heart and lungs, even from hundreds of miles away - like we saw in the summer of 2023! We wanted to take a quick poll of our audience… Where you live, how concerned are you about the health risks of wildfires for you and your family?

Hey VitaPeeps 🩺 What does a public health approach to reducing firearm violence teach us? Vitals host Sheena Williams investigates in our latest episode of Vitals (🔗 https://youtu.be/1yzzmehqntE ). In the city of Philadelphia, public health experts started by researching the scope of the problem, including risk factors. They also scientifically tested interventions, and have shown that simple physical changes to the environment can make a big difference. Philly has tens of thousands of abandoned or vacant lots –– a symbol of the city’s disinvestment in the community. But the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society has been on a city-wide initiative to “green” abandoned lots, or to turn them into park land. A study of over 500 of Philly’s vacant lots compared treated or greened lots with untreated, abandoned ones. It showed that gun violence dropped up to 29% in the vicinity of the greened lots, and also made residents feel safer. We believe that storytelling can teach us all how to thoughtfully and effectively respond to gun violence, so we’re wondering…how has firearm violence affected your community?
