I can't overstate what a pleasure it was talking to Killer Mike. Beyond being an absolute beast behind the mic, dude is such a dynamic thinker and his heterodox approach to music, politics and life is both refreshing and challenging. No sounds or ideas go untested, and whether you love his work, or agree with his beliefs, you have to respect the coherence of his POV and his commitment to constant elevation.

MICHAEL is easily my favorite album of 2023 (so far, of course) and it's inspiring to see a man of 48 years-old who continues to push himself to new depths of emotional candor, and his craft to new levels of technical innovation in the name of art, of greatness, and of personal growth. If interrogating any of the aforementioned topics sounds interesting, kindly watch our full conversation with Mike out now.

From his parents garage in Lakewood, NJ, armed with nothing but an airbrush compressor and a head full of ideas and angst, Marc Eckō grew a custom t-shirt business into a global brand: ECKŌ UNLTD. And then he built and acquired G-Unit, Zoo York, Avirex, Cut-N-Sew and ECKŌ Red. And because that wasnā€™t ambitious enough, he also broke into gaming with the million-seller ā€˜Getting Upā€™, and disrupted publishing with COMPLEX.

Which is right around when I first met him. Standing at adjacent urinals in the Menā€™s Bathroom at COMPLEX. It was my second day and Marc happened to pull up next to me. Despite having 500+ employees at that point, Marc, being the generous gentleman that he is, introduced himself with an elbow bump and welcomed me to the team. I tried to answer as I stared straight ahead harder than Iā€™ve ever stared. Thankfully, our relationship would get a lot less awkward from there, lol, and a year later, at the behest of Rich Antoniello, he and Rich would promote me to EiC.

And from that perch I got to witness ECKŌ achieve its peak, and, as marketplace pressures collided with internal tensions and The Great Recession, also its unraveling. TBH, it was brutal. But where most wouldā€™ve folded, Marc just piloted as graceful an emergency landing as possible, extricated himself, and took COMPLEX.

From the trenches alongside Rich, Mok, myself + the PLEX team, Marc helped us scaleā€”creating + leading COMPLEXCon, among other initiativesā€”from a bimonthly mag to a multifaceted entertainment company to an eventual 9-figure acquisition.

And then, having done the impossible, and done it twice, Marc channeled his endless curiosity into reforming our national education system at the NGOā€™s XQ and The Emerson Collective. And heā€™s just getting started!

So yeah, thereā€™s no way for me to articulate how much I admire Marcā€”as a creative, as an entrepreneur, and, most importantly, as a man. Or how grateful I am to him for the role heā€™s played in my life. So please consider this episode of IDEA GENERATION my effort to express all of that, and to gift our audience with Marcā€™s candor, conviction and clarity of vision. Episode out now!

I grew up in the boom-bap era, when hip-hop producersā€™s work product was instantly recognizable. From Dre to Premier to Q-Tip to Easy Moe Bee to Quik to Havoc to Pete Rockā€”as soon as I caught the bounce, and heard that first snare, I knew who was behind the beat. Of course as the commercial stakes increased, technology progressed, rhythm became quantized, and access to sounds reached ubiquity, it became increasingly challenging to identify each musicianā€™s trademark (hence, tags). Still, regardless of the shared tools, todayā€™s true innovators behind the boards manage to capture a feel, and a sound, that are wholly unique, and absolutely signature.

Which is why Iā€™m so excited to host Tay Keith on this weekā€™s episodeā€”dudeā€™s hats just bounce, and his snares always snap. Every. Single. Time. From ā€œLook Aliveā€ with Blocboy JB to ā€œSicko Modeā€ with Travis to ā€œNonstopā€ with Drake to ā€œNot Alikeā€ with Em to his inspired reworking of Mazeā€™s ā€œBefore I Let Goā€ with Beyonce, Tay is one of my favorite producers in the last decade. But those credentials actually only scratch the surface of what makes Tay so special, and our conversation so compelling.

From his humble beginnings as a teenaged beatmaker working Google AdSense + the YouTube algorithm for 3 figure checks to becoming a college DJ with local placements and a few grand in his pocket to churning out the aforementioned global hits and fielding major pub offers the year heā€™d receive his degree, Tayā€™s confluence of ambition + strategy is a blueprint begging to be studied. However, whatā€™s even more inspirational, and frankly impressive, is the personal adversity he overcameā€”a mother diagnosed first with schizophrenia, and then terminal cancerā€”while achieving these professional peaks. I honestly cannot imagine how he held it all together, let alone produced that body of work.

But he did, and he continues to thrive today, dipping his toe in investment, real estate, and entrepreneurship. And, as recently as his extensive work on Drake & 21 Savageā€™s album, the hats still bounce and the snares still snap.

Tay Keith episode out now.

A northstar that I learned to follow growing up under EgoTripā€”and a drum I would subsequently beat at COMPLEX frequently (maybe too frequently, if you let my team tell it, lol)ā€”is that humor is often the best entry point to connect to an audience. Laughing feels goodā€”people like to do it! And once you've created that visceral connection, you can take your tribe on an excursion to much more challenging or cerebral territory.

Which is why I'm overjoyed to host conceptual artist Nicole McLaughlin on IDEA GENERATION. Nicole has masterfully combined humor and novelty, with an intuitive understanding of internet culture, to create one-of-one pieces of footwear and apparelā€”constructed entirely of found materialsā€”that have lit social media aflame and sent her art viral many times over. But, arguably more interestingly and more importantly, she's used this virtuosity, not only to express herself, but to start a very necessary conversation around upcycling and corporate waste. And then, most impressively, she's built an entire business around it, hosting upcycling workshops for individuals and corporations, consulting for blue chip brands on how to turn their waste into product, and making environmentally conscious collaborations. Plus, she and her studio continue to churn out more incredibly clever, bespoke art pieces.

And just as interesting as her art and her business, Nicole's path is a fascinatingly instructive and inspirational journey that I think is applicable across discipline and across audience. All of which I say to say, if you are an aspiring creative, fan of fine art, or interested in figuring out how to help save the planet by making the most of the items you purchase, I highly recommend tuning in and checking out Nicole's story. - NCB
