โ€œ2029 if the opposition resolve to make former president Weah president again, I will campaign for him and bring him to powerโ€.

I am calling on all my supporters that believe in me and what I do to join me tomorrow in our peaceful walk at the capitol building.

President Joseph Boakai has formally recognized the majority bloc of the House of Representatives as the legitimate faction following the executiveโ€™s review of a recent Supreme Court ruling.

The endorsement comes after a legal review by Justice Minister Cllr. Oswald Tweh, who concluded that the majority bloc holds the constitutional authority to act on behalf of the House. Minister Tweh emphasized that the Supreme Courtโ€™s decision validated the majority blocโ€™s actions, affirming their right to hold sessions and make binding decisions.

โ€œMy reading of the Courtโ€™s opinion and analysis leads me to conclude that the majority members of the House of Representatives have met the constitutional requirements to convene and take decisions in accordance with the laws of Liberia and the Houseโ€™s Rules,โ€ Minister Tweh stated.

Senator Amara Konneh asks Where is our President?

The Legislature had a challenging year, with no major laws passed and limited investment in the FY24 Budget for the counties, our people, and Liberian-owned businesses, leading to declining public optimism in the future. However, the FY25 budget has the potential for improvement if governance is handled correctly. It requires careful scrutiny to prevent political manipulation and ensure it genuinely benefits the nation. This means serious work!

We need urgent action on the economy, which is sending mixed signals: the exchange rate is improving, but prices are stagnant or rising, joblessness is increasing, electricity is still scarce, businesses are struggling, and optimism is dwindling, especially regarding the fight against illicit drugs that threaten Liberiaโ€™s future. Our failure to address and invest in the LDEA this year is a missed opportunity that endangers our youth and the country's future. Leaders must prioritize this critical issue.

This is a call for decisive action and strong presidential leadership to restore order in the House of Representatives and move the country forward. I am fully aware of the separation of power doctrine in the Constitution. But as the 8th poorest country in the world, we canโ€™t afford to behave like a normal rich country. President Boakaiโ€™s success in the Executive Branch depends on a well-functioning Legislature. He must unite us now, following the Supreme Courtโ€™s opinion, to make 2025 a better year for our country.

The Honorable Speaker of the House of Representatives- HOR, Richard Nagbe Koon, has vowed to set the foundation for sound financial decision-makingโ€”one that advances financial probity and that guides against fraud, waste and abuse.

Speaking on Monday, December 9, 2024, at the start of the revenue hearing into the draft national budget for the fiscal year 2025, Speaker Koon told the gathering that such will be the best enabler for national development, growth and renewal.

The Speaker lauded President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., for the submission of the draft National Budget for Fiscal Year 2025 to the body in keeping with the Liberian Constitution.

He assured President Boakai, development partners, friends of Liberia and the great people of the Republic that under his stewardship, the legislature would be calm, peaceful and effective in doing the business of the Liberian people.

โ€œWe want to clearly emphasize that going forward, my gavel will ensure that the House of Representatives does its business differently; we will emphasize openness, transparency and accountability.

During this period of the budget debate, the Committee on Ways, Means and Finance is advised to ensure that oversight committees are available so that they are adequately guided about the priorities and challenges faced by the governmentโ€™s ministries, agencies and commissions (MACs)โ€, the Speaker stated.

According to him, to demonstrate such commitment, the HOR will accelerate the budget debate but at the same time, will do so through proper scrutiny and due diligence.

โ€œToday, as we continue to exercise our role as the new Speaker of the House of Representatives, we want to call on all of you honorable colleagues to discuss this budget with open-mindedness and with consideration that the Republic should always count Number One on our agendas. We need to critically look at our revenue streams to see whether we can source additional funds to support our development prioritiesโ€, Speaker Koon stated.

Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon said that way, Committees will be able to exercise their oversight adequately.

โ€œThis will further help oversight committees to do proper due diligence during the budget implementation period. We want to ensure that budget performance reports of various MACs are done and that they become the preconditions for increased fundingโ€, Hon. Koon averred.

The Honorable Speaker said, his gavel will further insist that County caucuses are briefed about the budget procedures and processes concerning their respective districts in keeping with transparency and accountability before the passage of the budget; this will inform their judgment in making sound decisions.

He added that the issues of County Development Funds and County Social Development Funds are key aspects of the AAID and caucuses must not be left unheard.โ€
