K ‘Thavil’ Raja is a Bangalore based percussionist and a pioneer in the field of Carnatic Jazz fusion music. In admiration of his work fellow musicians refer to him as ‘Thavil’ Raja. He is a maestro of the Thavil - a traditional South Indian percussion instrument. Raja is a rare Thavilist, since the mid-nineties he has looked to collaborate with other musicians to create unique transcultural genres. A power packed and happy performer Raja is currently with Saagara - an Indo Jazz Carnatic band. He plays alongside his mentor Waclaw Zimpel (Clarinet), Mysore N Karthik (Violin), Giridhar Udupa (Ghatam), and Bhargava Halambi (Khanjira and Morsing).
Saagara was formed in 2014 and have performed at many noted venues including the Wroclaw Philharmonic Hall in Warsaw and at the Best of World Music Festival at the Tata Theatre in Mumbai. The Thavil has traditionally accompanied the Nadaswara at weddings and other auspicious occasions in southern India.
