Can you believe 2024 is only 13 days away?

Every December, I think about my music goals for the next year.

Doing this has helped me grow exponentially (both in my music quality and streams). Because it gives me direction.

And I think you should do it too.

So I want to share a few questions to ask yourself as you reflect on 2023 and plan for 2024 as an electronic music producer:

#1: Did I achieve my music goals this year? 🤔

Be honest with yourself here, because the answer will fuel your motivation for next year.

For example, if you set the goal to release your first single, but didn't do it...

That will encourage you to make darn sure you'll do it next year.

Another example - If your song idea, arrangement or mixdown quality hasn't improved this year...

Chances are you relied on the same-old workflows that got the same-old results.

#2: What is my music still lacking? 🎶

A lot of our failed music goals come back to the quality of the music itself.
Good-quality sound selection?

Cleaner mixdowns?

Non-boring arrangements?

Get specific here - what about your sound selection is bad? How are your mixes not clean? Why is your music boring?

#3: How often did I make music this year? 🗓️

This is often the golden question.

If you answered negatively to the previous 2 questions...

It's probably because you weren't putting in the hours.

So analyze how many times a week (and how long for) you were in the studio, and try to up that next year.

#4: What is my #1 music goal for next year? 🥇

Now that you've reviewed this year, it's time to set 1 main goal for next year.

Here's a tip - don't set more than 1.

Don't try to release on your favourite label + do a remix for x artist + release your first LP.

Keep it simple, so you can put ALL of your energy into that goal.

Then you'll (probably) actually achieve it.

Here's another tip - set a goal you can control.

So if you want to release on XYZ label, that's a nice goal. But you can't control it.

A better goal is to send your music to 20 different labels that you like. Because even if ALL of them reject you, you still achieved your goal.

And if you need a hand setting goals, check out this timeless article from EDMProd's founder, Sam -> www.edmprod.com/setting-goals-as-a-music-producer/

#5: What music production habits should I implement next year to achieve that goal? 🔁

If your goal is the end, then your habits are the system that will get you there.

Here's a secret - no electronic music producer ever got somewhere by just setting goals.

They had to refine their craft. Make a lot of music. Share it with the world. And repeat.

So let's take the goal of sending your music to 20 labels. Which habits and steps would you need to put in place to hit that goal?

Here's a few:

- Make music regularly (in the studio for 60 mins every day)
- Finish 2 tracks per month (super achievable with the above habit)
- Analyze the sounds of the labels your aiming at, and incorporate it into your music
- Collect 6+ tracks to send to the first label, frontloading the best track first
- Follow up 1 week later
- Repeat every 2-3 weeks if no response

^ This stuff is what makes things happen. So it's important to create a system behind this.

Producers need goals, vision and systems to make things happen.

And I've got a video coming out tomorrow on this very topic, so keep an eye out.

Until then...

Happy producing,
-Aden
