Was out in Lisbon recently with @EdProsser and stumbled across an amazing local woodworking shop. We had a camera, a couple of lenses, and some DJI mics — no tripods, no lights, no grip… just the bare essentials.
Even with the bare bones setup, we managed to capture something really special. Check out what we came up with 👇

We all love buying new equipment & upgrading, but it’s easy to fall into spending traps. Here are some key tips I’ve used over the last 10 years...
🔹 Ecosystem Lock-in – Be careful when committing to a camera brand just because of lenses. If you don’t need autofocus, consider PL lenses ( or interchangeable mount) for more flexibility.
🔹 When to Upgrade?
📷 Cameras: Every 2-4 years (entry-level), 4-7 years (mid-tier), 10+ years (high-end cinema).
🎞️ Lenses: Hold onto them! They last much longer than cameras.
🔹 Avoiding Spending Traps
❌ Don't upgrade cameras too often.
❌ Avoid lenses you’ll rarely use.
❌ Skip unnecessary features & accessories.
💡 Buy used when possible, be mindful of software subscriptions, and invest in quality over cheap.
📌 Final Advice: Upgrade with a plan, invest where it matters, and don’t be afraid to ask for advice before making a big purchase!
CineGuides is now LIVE! Build a career in video.
