Spinal stenosis is a term used to describe a narrowing of the spinal canal that gives rise to symptoms of compression of the spinal nerves or the spinal cord.

Causes of Spinal Canal Stenosis

It can be caused by several factors, including:

Aging: As we age, the spinal canal can naturally become narrower due to the gradual wear and tear of the spinal column. This is a common cause of spinal canal stenosis in people over the age of 50.
Degenerative changes in the spine: This includes conditions such as herniated discs, bulging discs, spinal arthritis, and bone spurs. These conditions can cause the spinal canal to narrow and compress the spinal cord and nerves.
Trauma: Injuries to the spine, such as fractures or dislocations, can cause spinal canal stenosis.
Tumors: Abnormal growths in the spinal column, such as tumors, can cause compression of the spinal cord and nerves and lead to spinal canal stenosis.
Congenital abnormalities: Some people may be born with a narrower spinal canal than normal, which can lead to spinal canal stenosis.

Some of the common symptoms of spinal canal stenosis include:

Pain or discomfort in the neck or back
Radiating pain or numbness in the arms or legs
Weakness in the arms or legs
Difficulty with balance or coordination
Bladder or bowel
It can vary depending on the severity of the compression and the location of the narrowing.
