in the meantime, more thoughts on your BL recs (continued):
Heaven’s Official Blessing: love it. I binged all the volumes in a very short time frame; it’s both entertaining and thought-provoking. it’s interesting how the whole thing is basically one huge adventure story but with a romantic subplot that ties the story together and gives it new meaning and depth. it’s also interesting just how different romance becomes once it no longer has gender roles. the two boys (?) in love both fight together and have each other’s back, they treat each other like equals, so no one is “ashamed” to be saved and helped in a difficult situation. and then on the other hand we have a side male character who feels ashamed that his life got saved by a woman. besides all that, love the character work, all the main characters and the side characters are very well written, have their own psychology and quirks. Xie Lian is my favorite, of course; he is ridiculous and tragic and reminds me so much of myself.
Tokyo Babylon: love it, thoughtful and poignant. haven’t finished it yet, but I need someone like Hokuto in my life!!!
Color Recipe: oh boy. this one is an interesting but very disturbing character study. it depicts the cycle of abuse so compellingly it’s give you nightmares. and I’m convinced abusive relationships need to be explored in romance stories, it in the context of actual relationships with actual victims, not as a faraway concept when the victim is already dead. Stories like Color recipe actually expore how this kind of abuse actually happens, how you might not realize right away that this person that you like is an actual monster because of all the psychological manipulation. The fact that it’s BL also helps because, once the victim is not a woman it’s really clear how the whole situation is not the victim’s fault. Loved the story, even thought it was difficult to read.
Crimson Spell: in this one taming the beast takes a whole other meaning hehehe

also, not your rec, but perhaps one of my favorite stories that I read during the months of my BL deep dive is MADK. absolutely insane and sick and i loved every bit of it. portrays love as a doomed tragic attachment in a very compelling way.

new video is filmed and currently being edited. in the meantime, I thought I’d share my thoughts on some of your boys' love recs from the last post!
I’ve managed to read quite a few since then, so here we go:
Like the Beast: criminally cute. Absolutely adorable. Cute stories often lack substance, but that’s not the case here. It’s funny, gentle, thoughtful—the kind of story you need after a really bad day.
One Room Angel: sweet, sad, and atmospheric. Loved the art. Some story elements made me a bit nervous, so I was relieved to see everything resolve in a totally non-creepy way.
Killing Stalking: dark and disturbing. Reading it gives you the sick enjoyment of watching a car crash. Overall, I think I found it more disturbing than actually enjoyable—but perhaps that’s the whole point.
My Beautiful Man: loved it!!! I love the characters, and the story explores so much: how subtle the shifts in power dynamics can be in a relationship, how passionate, devoted love can seemingly put one person at the mercy of the other—but also function as a self-centered, narcissistic fantasy. I loved the manga so much I went on to read the novel in Japanese and… picked up some interesting vocab along the way, lmao.
The Song of Wind and Trees: The manga that literally started BL. Unexpectedly passionate and sensual. I actually liked it more than The Heart of Thomas, which I read a while back.
Pornographer: made me laugh out loud quite a few times. Then it got kind of weird and sugary.
Painter of the Night: problematic in a boring kind of way. I like my problematic reads to have a bit more substance than this. For now, it just reads like your typical poor-boy-gets-SAed-and-r*ped-by-his-superior kind of story. Maybe I’m missing something?
Classmates: I read Dokyuusei a while back, and for some reason it left me with a weird feeling—or rather, Rihito’s passivity made me uncomfortable. But it was cute!
This time I read the sequel, and it was also cute—heartwarming in a very authentic, natural kind of way. The story and dialogue don’t feel scripted at all.
Harasen is still a creep though.
pt 2 is coming

Hi, I'm Dinara, I study culture, make art and try my best to create engaging videos about the things I'm interested in. I'm specifically interested in "women's culture", female-oriented media and all the things that are intended "for girls." I consume content meant for women and girls from all over the world, such as romance novels, shoujo and josei manga, women's fiction, otome isekai webtoons, otome games, erotica, and everything in between. I think that female-oriented media both construct and reflect how we experience girlhood and womanhood, which is why analyzing them is fascinating. This channel is basically an outlet for my personal research, haha. My videos are results of my constant battles with perfectionism (I feel like I loose most of the time, though), which is why creating them takes longer than I'd like. But I'm still learning this whole YouTube thing and hopefully will continue to become better at it.
