IMPORTANT COPYRIGHT UPDATE: The Best of Retro VGM #617 (the overworld theme from Yoshi's Island) also got struck off YouTube, despite being unlisted. That means that I'm only one copyright complaint from getting my channel removed. As a countermeasure, I've decided to private all of my Nintendo uploads (even though it doesn't save you from copyright strikes IIRC) for the time being. Keep in mind that the strikes were submitted by a certain copyright firm representing several video game companies, not just Nintendo, so the channel is still at risk of being deleted.

I won't be challenging those copyright claims because channels like mine are a form of piracy and companies that submit such claims are fully within their rights to do so. I also won't make another VGM channel if this one gets scrubbed off the internet - it's just too much effort for what's a very, very, very niche thing (someone could call my channel "a total flop" but I don't want to sound too ungrateful towards those that did listen to my uploads).

As for me? I don't have any real social media presence but I am a part of a fansubbing group called LocationScouts that translates episodes of a Japanese retrogaming show called Game Center CX into English. You can find us on both Twitter and Bluesky. I'm running both of these accounts so feel free to get in touch through DMs if this channel ends up getting deleted.

For now, I'll resume posting as usual (minus Nintendo tracks). Wish me luck, I guess.

Update: I've decided to unlist all of the tracks from all the major Nintendo titles for the time being (at least until my current strike runs out, assuming my channel will still be there in 90 days). They are still available through my playlists (I really need to split the main playlist into parts or something...) if you want to listen to them. Going forward, I'll probably take the same approach as with Square-Enix and Namco games, and the future Nintendo tracks will be publicly available for a week or two before getting unlisted and only available through my playlists.

The Best of Retro VGM track #728 (SMW2: Yoshi's Island - Athletic) was struck off of YouTube by some copyright group on behalf of Nintendo. That made perfect sense at first, but then I noticed that this professional company just happens to use Gmail. If my channel gets taken down, then I sure hope it's by the actual copyright holders, it'd be a waste if it all got taken down by some random guy...

I'll try my best to keep you all updated.

Nintendo just announced their own Spotify-style music service (because of course they're going to be obtuse about it). If this channel gets taken down overnight, you'll now know why!

Seriously though, I've been through a few copyright scares (which luckily amounted to nothing), but Nintendo doesn't play around with things like this, ESPECIALLY nowadays. If this is it, then I'd like to thank everyone for following this dumb little project of mine, almost 11 years is one hell of a run. I will continue posting as usual for the time being.

One dumb idea, three months' worth of research, downloading FLACs and R--making legal backups from my own collection of games and soundtracks, taking screenshots, and a couple of Sony Vegas crashes later, it's almost done. Coming soon(-ish)!

Just wanted to say that this channel might be going down soon. Last night, I've received over a dozen privacy complaints, by someone who is obviously abusing the system (the videos were picked up at random). I don't know how to counteract (and any form of complying to the claims needs an approval from the person who filed them, and I have a feeling that they won't cooperate). If this is it for my channel, then I would like to thank everyone for watching.

I would like to do a few playlists/marathons for The Best of Retro VGM's 10th anniversary. I already have a 30-track April Fool's set prepared and I'm planning to finally do the "The Evolution of GBC Music" playlist (which I promised a while back alongside a GBA set), but I would like to do a couple more. Which one of the options below sounds most appealing to you? You can also suggest your own ideas.

With the 3DS and the Wii U officially getting abandoned by Nintendo, it looks like those two machines have now joined the "legacy systems" crowd. This gave me a very cursed idea: would you like to see Wii U and 3DS games on The Best of Retro VGM? The catch is that, since I'm fully aware that's a pretty controversial move, I would only post tracks from games that are at least 10 years old (nowadays that would be games from 2011-2013, with 2014 titles getting added next year and so on).

So, would you like to see 10+-year-old 3DS and Wii U games on The Best of Retro VGM? Please be honest.
