Patching in isnā€™t always the best option. Sometimes itā€™s the worst thing to do

I recently received an email and I thought it would be good to share.

Check this outā€¦(PICTURE ABOVE)

ā€”ā€”

Hi Blaine

Hope you donā€™t mind me picking your brains but lots of the plaster is blown (see photo).Ā

At this stage would you just remove all the plaster on that wall and put new PB on?
I.e remove radiator, windowsill, picture frame, and assume skirt would need to come off too?
Also, thereā€™s some old lath & plaster in the lintel above the window frame, would you take this off before putting on PB?

Or is it possible to put PB next to the old plaster and put tape between the joins?

Thank you,Ā
RichĀ

ā€”ā€”

This is one of them situations where patching is the inferior product.

Check this outā€¦

Thereā€™s not enough plaster on the wall to warrant keepingā€¦so knock it off. Another reason is that the existing plaster is there now but will no doubt become weak in the future.

Think about it,

The plaster is the same.

It was applied at the same time with the same materials

If half the wall has blown and been removed then whatā€™s the odds of the rest of the wall doing the same?? Pretty high - especially since youā€™ve started hacking away at the wall.

This disruption will most definitely weaken the bond to the remaining plaster.

And lastly.

Itā€™s hard patching into existing.

The wall might be bent,

Youā€™re working too old plaster

And itā€™s just not fun ha! So hack off. Start again. Itā€™s up to you howā€¦either use solid plaster or Dot & Dabā€¦but either way, do the right thing,

And start a fresh!

Have any questions??

This is Alex and she learnt the basics to plastering in 7 hours. The truth is that plastering isnā€™t a dark art.

Plastering is actually quite simple. You donā€™t need to know trigonometry. You donā€™t need to be a Rain Man with numbers.

You just need to master these three main principles:

1. Applying the plaster
2. Getting the plaster flat
3.Finishing

Whether itā€™s rendering or plastering, this is the main goal. It all comes down to these three principles. The thing that makes plastering hard is the fact that it takes lots of muscle memory. You have to be doing it a lot!

People have a massive lack of confidence in their plastering skills. They struggle to achieve a smooth, professional finish, and they fear theyā€™ll never be skilled enough to confidently tackle any project in their home.

But hereā€™s the truth:

You just need experience.

That comes from doing it

And over time, your trowel will feel like an extension of your arm.

It may seem odd to you nowā€¦but itā€™ll become second nature. Application becomes easy, timing becomes an afterthought, and finishing just happens.

But hereā€™s the truth:

You just have to do itā€¦ a lot. Donā€™t overthink the results. Donā€™t try to force the future because everything you do can be fixed. Every mistake you make can be filled, and thereā€™s nothing you can do that will destroy your home or the wall youā€™re working on.

The beauty is that you can just pick it up and do it again.

So, my best advice to any new plasterer is this:

Just START!

Videos, blog posts, and forums are great. But theyā€™re not going to give you what you need. You need to start. Pick a wall youā€™re not scared of ruining and just plaster it. Feel the plaster, drop it on your shoes, get it in your hair!!

Get it everywhere.

This is what Alex did.

But she succeeded!

This is the only way youā€™ll learn because overthinking it will cripple your results. Youā€™ll gain the experience of 1,000 videos by just picking up the trowel and doing it. So just go. Thatā€™s my number one piece of advice. And once youā€™ve started, you can then refine as you go. But leave your fear at the door and crack on!!

Thatā€™s where the real glory is.

If you want to know the process I used to teach Alex in 7 hours then check out the link below:

But rememberā€¦JUST START

I looked down, and there was water everywhere.

I heard the bang before I saw the damage! The bucket of water I was holding had exploded all over the oak floorā€¦ right before I was set to plaster.

Letā€™s flash back 16 years ago. I had just agreed to plaster my friendā€™s dadā€™s bedroom ceiling, and I was very new to plastering. I was green, but I had the basics down by this point. I had a modest tool collection:

Buckets, a mixer, a trowel, and a hawk.

Definitely enough to get byā€¦but I had just bought two cheap buckets from B&Qā€”Ā£1 each.

BARGAIN!

I filled the buckets up to the top.

Walked my way to the roomā€¦

BANG!!

Water was everywhereā€¦ all over the oak floor! The handle from the bucket had snapped clean off, and I was left holding just the plastic handle while the bucket smashed to pieces. Luckily, my friend was in, and we quickly grabbed whatever trowels we could find to mop up all the water. All was saved in the end, but hereā€™s the moral of the story:

Donā€™t buy cheap.

EVER!!

Not buckets, not dust sheets, and definitely notā€¦

Trowels!

Youā€™ll never get a good finish with cheap trowels. Cheap trowels provide cheap results, which will make you a cheap plasterer. You might get away with it in your own home, but if you want to run a successful business, youā€™ll never win this way.

But the question is, which tools do we actually need? Everyone asks this question, and with so many trowels and tools on the market, itā€™s hard to choose the right one.

Which Marshalltown trowel is it? What size, what model, what colour?? All these questions confuse the beginner plasterer. So let me sort it for you. On Day 3 of The Plastering For Beginners Course Iā€™ll give you a full PDF on every tool I recommend for plastering with direct links to each product

So stop searching and get the right tools for the job. This is just one of the things youā€™ll receive with our FREE training Course. Click below to find our what else we have for you.

Iā€™ve been testing and recently, Ditched my Speedskims, Flexi trowels and Sponge Floats. Iā€™ve gone OLD SCHOOL!

And long story short is that Iā€™ve been getting better results with just one trowel. I havenā€™t even been finishing with my Plaziflex trowel. Now, Iā€™m not suggesting that you should ditch all your toolsā€¦Iā€™m not trying to rewrite everything Iā€™ve taught you.

Iā€™m just enjoying using the old-school method of one trowel.

Itā€™s really nice not having to carry a thousand trowels around with you.

But the truth is this:

If you want similar results, you have to master something first. And thatā€™s the way you apply your plaster. A lot of beginners struggle with thisā€”I did too! But the biggest challenge with using just one trowel is that youā€™re reliant on getting your plaster flat with a trowel.

Speedskims are great!

But I think you need to master the basics first. You have to know the fundamentals. And the truth is, a lot of people donā€™t know them.

Applying your plaster correctly is probably the best thing you can learn as a plasterer. It will increase your speed, help you plaster your walls flatter from the start, and help you avoid the biggest problem that ALL beginners suffer from:

Time wasting!!

So many beginners WASTE TIME when they apply plaster.

They faff about.

They mess with the plaster.

And this kills results.

Seriouslyā€¦ this kills results. Now, I want to share a video with you that will absolutely explode your progress if you simply follow it. You donā€™t need any extra skills, you donā€™t need any extra talent. But thereā€™s one thing I explain at 3:45 in the video that will completely change the way you look at plastering.

Itā€™s a mindset change that will radically alter how you approach application. Because there are so many people who waste time during the application stage, which leads to slower results, a stressful environment, and a sloppy finish.

If you fall behind during the first stage of plastering, youā€™ll forever be catching up with yourself.

You donā€™t want this.

This training video will change everything.

Sign Up using the link below to get this unseen video below. Iā€™ll show you the best way to start applying your plaster with a whole new mindset that will not only get you better results, but also make you a better plasterer INSTANTLY. Trust meā€¦ it works.

Itā€™ll make you a better plasterer.

New video out tonight on the 12th November at 5:45pm and it's all about a job with a race against time. Im on tight deadlines, (which will make more sense in the video), and the pressure has never been bigger. But work aside, this is probably the most personal video I've made. I talk about work pressures, burnout and the effect work has on our family unit...and I think this probably effects everyone at this moment in time.Ā

I also have a massive announcement with a huge update to share with you all. It's a jam packed video - hope you rate it. Watch it from the link below. Cheers!
