Urdu poetry has a tradition and it has many forms. Urdu poetry is an important part of South Asian culture. According to Naseer Turabi, there are five great Urdu poets: Mir Taqi Mir (d. 1810), Mirza Ghalib, Mir Anis, Allama Iqbal and Josh Malihabadi (d. 1982). In the British Raj, Urdu language reached its peak and gained official status. Even after the partition of India in 1947, Urdu poetry is valued in both Pakistan and India. Both Muslims and Hindus have continued this tradition.
Its popularity among the people has not diminished. Due to the cultural influence of South Asians, Urdu poetry is performed all over the world today. Ghazal singing and qawwali are also important forms of Urdu poetry.
