A great adventure I come back to every so often on YouTube is Steve Clarke-Lens' epic 4000 mile deep sea sailing voyage from the Ionian Islands in Greece to Egypt up the river Nile and back again....all in a 17 foot Wayfarer dinghy! Filmed in 1991 which for the time was pretty impressive from an open dinghy.

Give it a look!

Over the past week I've taken part in the 'Jester Challenge' sailing solo from Plymouth to Baltimore in the wilds of southern Ireland. This challenge (not race) requires skippers to use sail only for the entire trip using engine only in the event of emergencies. The start was initiated by Ewen Southby-Tailyour OBE from yacht Eclipse in company with 'Mingming' skipper Roger Taylor. A total of 33 yachts of various classes started. The route required us to pass to the south of the Scilly Isles and around the Fastnet Rock. On Thursday at 15:30 Katrina crossed the finish line into Baltimore Harbour, a total of 304nm and 4 days 3 hours 30 minutes at sea. A video of the passage will follow on my youtube channel.
You can find more info on the Jester challenges which are run every year in the below link.

Wow what a mess the North atlantic is currently, one low pressure system after another. A friend shared some photos of Aberdeen breakwater this week, with an mostly invisible lighthouse buried in the breaking waves. Just as well Katrina is now tucked up in the super secure Shotley marina waiting patiently for some more stable conditions.

It was a couple of weeks ago now and decided after an anchor stop in Hamford water to grab a lunchtime pint in Harwich. Coming alongside at Half penny pier I noticed a very 'kitted out' looking sea going vessel flying an American flag moored on the opposite side of the pontoon. The skipper happened to be Sam Holmes in his yacht 'Pickled Herring'. For those who haven't seen Sam's youtube channel 'Sam Holmes Sailing' his vlogs are 100% worth the watch. Whether sailing a 23ft boat from Los Angeles to Hawaii or making an 100nm passage in a leaking hobbiecat catermaran. After a brief chat about approaches to London which was Sam's next port of call I left to return to Pin Mill. Fair winds Sam Holmes and Pickled Herring. 😎 ⛵

Removing antifouling must be the worst boat owner job going, after a week of scraping and sanding shes ready for some light repairs before application. Video coming soon. 😁
