Ahoy friends! As a lot of you know, southern Appalachia has been absolutely devastated by floodwaters and mudslides coming from Hurricane Helene. I'm completely safe working over in the Ozarks, but my friends back home are really going through it right now. A colleague who works for the Appalachian Voices nonprofit has compiled a list of reputable shelters, food distributors, and other disaster relief organizations working in the High Country. My people have a long road ahead and anything we can do to help will be massively appreciated. The link to the list is in the comments. Thank Y'all!

This weekend I jumped online with fellow shovel trash Dane Roberts on his channel "Archaeoviking" and his colleague Ian Read to watch and discuss the first episode of Scott Wolter's raging dumpster fire of a series "America Unearthed." It was a good time. Go give it a look!

I want to shout out my friend JT's new video about Spiro Mounds in Oklahoma. He worked there and has some good insights.

I just want to gauge y'all's interest in something I want to do. If I can get all the permissions needed to do a low-budget analysis (like species identification of bone tools with mass spectrometry) would anybody be interested in joining a crowdfunding campaign? I'm imagining that backers would get progress updates and access to the final report, as well as a mention in the report's acknowledgement section.
If we can make this work at a small scale (a few hundred dollars), I want to start partnering with bigger channels to fund more ambitious research projects, but I need to demonstrate this can be done at a smaller scale first.

The Cherokee have been writing in their own language with their own script for generations, and recent research by Beau Carroll, Julie Reed, Jan Simek, and colleagues has found that Cherokee spiritual leaders wrote messages to the spirit world in their own language. This is a link to a video lecture that Dr. Simek gave last year about this subject.

I just confirmed an interview with Dr. Seth Grooms who teaches at Appalachian State University and I'm opening the floor for questions. Dr. Grooms's work deals with Archaic monumental earthwork sites like Poverty Point and the less known but slightly earlier Jaketown site in Mississippi. (The picture I've uploaded is a carved effigy from Jaketown.) So please, do us a solid and ask us some questions!

I want to thank everyone who joined me here in 2023. It's been a ride! It started out with excavations on three Dalton and Archaic sites in the Arkansas Ozarks. From there I went to Orkney in northern Scotland where I excavated a 5000 year old bone bed. When I got back I went to Tennessee and worked with my colleague Jordan Schaefer and my former bassist (Jake Jones of Aether Realm) on some groundbreaking and award-winning archaeoacoustics research at a cave art site. Next I went up to Michigan's Upper Peninsula and documented a bunch of 1800s lumberjack sites, followed by a short stint on Redstone Arsenal working on an old plantation house. I wrapped things up in Oklahoma on an ancestral Wichita village. With all that I was somehow able to make myself write, record and edit another 17 videos for the channel. So once again, thank you all for joining me and have a happy 2024!

We got some good news today!
the Southeastern Archaeology conference voted to uphold its image policy, which means that they will no longer publish research that uses photographs or drawings of Indigenous mortuary items unless the descendant stakeholders give formal consent to have those images published. I know this may seem esoteric to some of you, but this is a MASSIVE step forward for the relationship between archaeology and the indigenous people whose ancestors we study. Thank you to everyone who voted to uphold this policy!

I'm doing a video tomorrow about the Calf Creek phase from an Ozarchaic site I worked on in 2015. to give it some better context I recommend taking a look at this presentation by Dr. Jon Lohse. It's a fantastic overview.

My name is Nathanael Fosaaen. I've been a professional archaeologist since I graduated from Appalachian State University in 2012, and I received my M.A. From UT Knoxville in 2022. I've worked on and occasionally supervised archaeological excavations from Alaska to Ireland, but most of my work has been concentrated in the Southeast of the United States. Over the years I've become increasingly frustrated by the lack of attention that the accomplishments of Native American Peoples get in both the global academic community, and ESPECIALLY the general public. So, this channel is designed to provide anyone who is interested in archaeology an easy starting point for as many subjects as I can think of to provide.

IF YOU HAVE A SITE OR ARTIFACTS TO SHOW, PLEASE CONTACT YOUR STATE ARCHAEOLOGY SOCIETY, NOT ME.
They will know the material of your region better than I will, and will have at least as much experience and training.
