In 1989 a small independent film was made near Dallas, Texas that challenged the status quo and showed African-Americans fighting back against their oppressors. After a brief theatrical run and home video release, it all but disappeared…until now.

In a small Georgia town white supremacy and Black power come face to face. Major Quinton (STEVE JAMES) and his men are on the lam, running from a rigged court martial. They seek refuge in the small Georgia town of Riverbend where a cruel white sheriff (TONY FRANK) is terrorizing the Black population. Bell (MARGARET AVERY) becomes their only ally in a town on the verge of exploding. Quinton is enraged by the injustice he sees. He mobilizes a secret army and formulates a brilliant plan. In one bold stroke, on one fateful night, the fight for freedom and human rights will be decided. Soon the entire world will know the name—RIVERBEND.

Virtually unseen for nearly 35 years, this brand new 2K restoration (made from rare 35mm elements) was supervised by director Sam Firstenberg (American Ninja) and produced by Reelblack and makes its World Premiere at the 2024 Denton Black Film Festival Sat, Jan 27th, 2:35 PM @ Alamo Drafthouse - Denton Theater 8 (get tix at www.dentonbff.com or dbff24.eventive.org/films/riverbend-1989-657abfbc7… )

Filmmaker Sam Firstenberg, Debbi James (daughter of the late actor Steve James), Assistant Director Mike Shanks and Restoration Executive Producer Michael J. Dennis will be in attendance for a post film discussion about the film and the legacy of Steve James.

When: Thursday October 12, 2023 7:00-10:30pm
Where: The Rotunda 4014 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104

Reelblack, the film production and promotion company founded by Michael Dennis will celebrate its 20th Anniversary with a special screening of short films from its archive on Thursday October 12, 2023 from 7:00-10:30pm. Screening will take place at The Rotunda, 4014 Walnut Street, as part of its Bright Bulb Screening series Admission is FREE and open to the public.

Reelblack, who identifies its mission to ‘educate, entertain, enlighten and empower through the magic of film,“ began its screening series in December 2003 at the Prince Music Theater (now the Philadelphia Film Center) about a year after Mr. Dennis began making films full-time in the city. In 2006, Reelblack TV was founded to feature celebrity interviews and concert performances including Ava DuVernay, Spike Lee, Jazmine Sullivan, Janelle Monae, Dick Gregory, Chris Rock and many more. The show still airs monthly on PhillyCAM and has over 1.3 million subscribers on YouTube. Thursday night’s event will feature clips from The Reelblack TV archive as well as a surprise screening of a feature-length project of footage unseen for over a decade.

“There are a lot of great moments that would have been lost to time if not for our cameras” said Dennis, who recently began teaching at Temple University and is about to start a video label. “On October 12 we will share a few of those memories.”

“Sharing empowering informative art for over 20 years has been life fulfilling,” concurs Daryl DeBrest, who has partnered with Dennis since 1999 in capturing these moments. “Telling our own stories is important for self-liberation!”
