Last weekend my wife and I were out and about in our car late in the evening. It was dark and had been raining for practically the whole day. We were stopped at a traffic light controlled intersection and waiting to turn left. As we pulled up to stop, I saw a Motorcyclist roll to a stop in the 2nd lane which was going straight. That’s when I pointed out to my wife, how practically ‘invisible’ the motorcycle and rider was. As it is, most car drivers don't ‘see’ motorcycles during a clear daytime, worse still in the dark and then add the shiny sleek rain drenched streets and the rain covered windscreens.

As you can see from the photo and the short video, it would take time for anyone to come to notice the small motorcycle light and for the brain to register that it is a motorcycle and extra care and attention is needed.

Personally, not being ‘visible’ to others from the back has been a big concern. I have a set of bright auxiliary light up front, which makes me pretty visible to oncoming traffic as well as in rear view mirrors of the car drivers/riders in front of me. But for the back, except of the small red brake/running light and amber indicators there are very few options for the back. Bright auxiliary lights facing backwards would only blind the drivers behind. I’ve been looking for something that not only makes me more visible but also warns the traffic behind me that a motorcycle rider is slowing down / stopping. It would be nice to have a light at helmet height providing for better visibility in conjunction with the motorcycle’s brake and indicator light cluster.

This also educated my wife of the dangers we, motorcyclists, face on the roads - daytime or night - rain or shine! And also highlighted the fact that drivers should consciously ‘look for’ motorcycles - especially in front of them. Most, if not all, motorcycle riders (during urban riding - through busy streets and highways) ride as if every vehicle is out to harm the motorcycle and rider. Heightened defensive riding!

Social media and its algorithms seem to learn so much about us from our online activities - truly amazes me. They say ‘we don’t listen through your phones’ - for me, the jury’s out on that. I digress.
Based on my Instagram and YouTube activity, this video came up on my YouTube feed. Something to do with motorcycles; something to do with the fact that time is finite; I had to watch and listen.
I often get asked ‘Why do you ride?’ ‘What do you get out of it?’ And in answering, it is fairly difficult to articulate the feelings, the emotions, the freedoms and the joys of motorcycling. In his video, in a simple and effective manner ‘Bug’, the creator of this video, answers these questions from his perspective. A perspective that most, if not all, riders would relate to. Bug also touches upon the idea of time being finite and we should ride (do things we enjoy) before it’s too late.
