Hello friends! This morning, I was reading about the story of Jesus and his disciples in Mark 4, and I just loved the phrase, "Suddenly... there was a great calm."
The disciples were frantic. What started as a respite from a crowd of people quickly turned into a near-death experience. A storm came upon them. High waves were crashing into the boat, filling it with water. If you're familiar with boats, it's not good when there's a lot of water in the boat...
In the middle of this great storm, Jesus slept peacefully.
His peaceful sleep was interrupted by loud accusations from his disciples, "Don't you care about us!!?? We're going to drown!!" I don't know about you, but I'm not a happy camper when children come running in shouting, loudly waking me up. I can only imagine how Jesus felt waking up from a peaceful sleep!
"When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and said to the waves, 'Silence! Be Still!' "
"Suddenly, the wind stopped, and there was a great calm. Then he asked them, 'Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?' "
Do you still have no faith?
The disciples were WITH Jesus. They experienced Jesus and all of his teachings and miracles first-hand. And yet - they were absolutely terrified of drowning. Jesus had to remind them who has ultimate authority of the winds and seas.
This is the Jesus we can put our hope in. This is the Jesus that can calm our seas.
