✅ An azygos lobe is a normal but rare anatomical variation of the right upper lobe of the lung, formed when the precursor to the azygos vein fails to migrate over the lung’s apex during development.
✅ This results in the vein penetrating the lung and pulling pleural layers with it, creating a distinct fissure that encircles a portion of the lung. It is a common incidental finding on imaging
✅ it is a benign finding, typically seen in 1-2% of the population, and doesn’t usually have clinical significance unless the affected “azygos lobe” leads to complications like bronchial obstruction
