Am now back at my desk in Australia, probing some of the questions raised by our visit to Ayanis Kalesi, Cavus Tepe and Kef Kalesi in the region of Van in Anatolia, Turkiye. The people of these lands are known for many firsts - the earliest crop cultivation, viticulture and animal husbandry, the earliest endeavours of the iron age. When did they start buidling with Basalt? How many Urartian cultures are we looking at? How many courses of Basalt did Urartian buildings have, and how much of those structures lie hidden in the hillsides? What geological catastrophes has the region suffered and how recently? And why does the lexicon of symbology and theology echo in cultures all around the world? As I say in the clip, we have a lot of "maths" to do and our visit left us full of questions and possibilities. That's why we will be returning in September with geological and archeological experts to help us address those questions. Van is beautiful country, about to balloon in tourism and archeological exploration - and rightly so. It is home to warm and welcoming people. We are grateful for the generous hospitality we enjoyed and the information already gleaned and appetitious for so much more. Next week I will be travelling with my friend and fellow researcher Matt LaCroix to the Lake Van region of Turkiye where we will be exploring ancient sites and examining mysterious artefacts which shine a unique light on the story of humanity.
