Five Key Quotes from Oxford University's Professor Raymond Pierrehumbert on the Risks of Solar Geoengineering:

"The most scary thing about a world in which we have relied on solar geoengineering to keep the Earth habitable is what I call the Damocles world scenario."

"If you're ever forced to stop that geoengineering, you're hit with a massive, rapid warming called termination shock, where you get all that pent-up warming that you've been cancelling out coming back at you in a matter of under a decade."

"We shouldn't be actively creating harm. And the first line of defence is to actually not at least have governments and philanthropy funding these outdoor experimentations."

"Solar geoengineering is just another stick for the rich world to clobber the poor world with."

"The whole time you have this thin stratospheric layer, which has to be maintained without fail, which is all that there is between you and an absolute climate disaster." watch video on watch page

In this ClimateGenn episode I am speaking with Professor David Beerling about his rock-breaking research that could help to regenerate agricultural soils, while also enhancing their capacity as vast carbon sinks.

Carbon dioxide removal (CDR) is a controversial topic and yet it is also embedded within many national plans for carbon reduction. David Beerling is the leading researcher in this field of Enhanced Rock Weathering, and here he shares a wide range of insights about the potential for deployment, effectiveness and scaling to meet our global challenges.

Obviously no one is suggesting that this can replace carbon emissions reductions. The transition to renewables is the critical societal evolution of our times. Even this obvious statement sounds controversial at a time when powerful state-backed corporations are doubling down on fossil fuel production and profiteering.

These are tough times for anyone who understands the science of climate change and rate of ecological destruction, as we see the rise of corruption and actions of psychopaths that have long-term impacts on all our lives.

With Europe having no choice but to propose hundreds of billions of euros be invested in a new arms race for defence in human conflict, we collectively appear blind to the threat posed by mother nature, a far mightier enemy of our own creation.

In future episodes we’ll be exploring many related themes and also looking for ways to stay engaged in issues that matter without becoming psychologically exhausted.

Thank you for listening, please do like and share and, if you can, become a member of ClimateGenn to support future episodes.

A quick note - David uses the acronym, MRV - this stands for the Monitoring, Reporting and Verification in greenhouse gas removal discussions and is a critical topic. watch video on watch page

This interview with with Min Hee Go about her book studying how communities responded in the wake of Hurricane Katrina gives some good insight into the difference between building back stronger and embedding vulnerability to a repeat or worse future situation. watch video on watch page

UK Met Office Chief Meteorologist & Climate Impacts Expert Join Forces: Forecasting Extreme Storms To Save Lives

In this ClimateGenn episode, Professor Paul Davies and Professor Hayley Fowler discuss their collaboration to bridge the gap between meteorology and climatology.

We describe weather very loosely as what we can see when we look outside the window, whereas climate is weather over a period of time. For too long these fields have been siloed and as we enter the period of worsening extreme storms, floods, heatwaves, droughts and all the knock-on effects that they entail.

In this interview both Paul and Hayley make the risks and the approaches to establishing warning systems, very clear. New technology can help us but it will not cure the problem. We urgently need emissions reductions at huge rates to try to stabilise the climate in future scenarios.

It is now too late to avert a new era of climate disasters, including large-scale damage to infrastructure, accelerating tipping points and huge loss of life. Our food systems and supply chains are also at risk.

Thanks for supporting this channel. I am in the midst of finishing a large project which has caused a backlog of interviews I am working through. All support is greatly appreciated.

Thank you. watch video on watch page

New Book: Saving Ourselves by Dana R Fisher - We will see a policy cascading effect after millions die from climate shocks

This episode with Dana R fisher is the unofficial part 2 of 3 looking at the sociological side of collective action, while we try to slow the sinking of the Titanic, to make homes on the lifeboats.

The rub in all this is that Dana’s message is not dissimilar from Roger Hallam’s (unofficial part 1). She agrees that millions will likely die before the so-called Anthroshift kicks in and we get the cascade of structural policies we need to respond en masse to the crisis.

The detail in all we discuss is in Dana’s new book, ‘Saving Ourselves - From Climate Shocks To Climate Action’.

If you want a close up lens on the structural failures to date, coupled with the determination of those in power to ignore the loud and clear science, then please do consider buying my book COPOUT. I’ve had great feedback from climate luminaries such as Sir David King, Bill McKibben, Alice Hill, Rupert Read, and others. watch video on watch page
