Friends, I urgently ask you all to pray for those in western NC as well as all those affected in other states by Hurricane Helene. This was a storm of unprecedented magnitude. Many were caught unaware and believed they would be safe as we have never seen such a storm here in our lifetimes. A local meteorologist called this a “1,000 year storm.” Whole neighborhoods, cities, and roads have been washed away. Right now, many are still waiting to be rescued and have no means of communication. Families are desperately trying to find information about their loved ones they cannot reach. And many, many brave people are attempting the nearly impossible to bring them to safety.

As I see countless people from across the nation - and even Canada - gathering to meet these unprecedented needs, I am amazed. The rows of vehicles that have been heading for days now into WNC and elsewhere to bring mutual aid and resources, the individuals and businesses immediately beginning to collect much-needed supplies, and people of faith rallying for prayer show us the best side of humanity.

Right now, we have many people who are anxious and grieving. Many may be questioning God. As we pray for people, let’s pray not only for their physical needs but for their hearts to be comforted.

Remember above all, friends - no matter how fearful the events around us may be, or how great our loss, God remains in control. And these events do happen. There is nothing new under the sun, calamities have been a part of our existence since the fall of man as we live in a fallen world. And we know that in these last days, they will continue to increase and amplify. (Mark 13, Matt. 24-25)

For the believer, our hope remains in Jesus alone - everything else in this life is temporary. And even if you were not personally affected by this storm, you do not know when you will be affected by the next storm - whatever it may be. So please, let us all do what we can to encourage one another and lift one another up in prayer and continue to do so.

“For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:38-39

When I was a kid, I remember getting very frustrated every time I used syrup for my pancakes. Why? Because it was stored in the refrigerator and wouldn’t easily come out of the container. Mind you, this wasn’t maple syrup or organic syrup. This was the ‘80s - and this was essentially just caramel-colored corn syrup. 😅

One day (when I could read) I finally looked at the label myself and saw that it did not require refrigeration. I then asked my mom, “why do we keep putting this in the fridge??!” To which she responded, “I don’t know, that’s what my mom did.” I then asked my grandma why she did. She said the same thing, she didn’t know, they had just always done it that way.

Which brings me to my point. Read the labels for yourself. Do your own research. Know why you are doing what you do. Understand your own actions. Don’t ever be satisfied with “that’s how it’s always been done,” “that’s how my family does it” or “that’s what everyone like me does.”

Think and research for yourself. Don’t be ruled by feelings and opinions - not your own and certainly not anyone else’s. And always, always be ready (and humble enough) to accept when you have acted or believed in ignorance.

Recently, I have been studying the story of King Josiah and am amazed that anyone (let alone a child) could come to the throne, earnestly seek the will of God, and almost immediately get to the work of restoring his kingdom. All without the benefit of The Law - which had been lost to time and neglect. He defied his times and brought down every high place, destroyed every evil thing and put to death all practitioners of evil, and restored the holy temple of the one true God. And, amazingly, The Law was found by the workmen in the process. Upon the discovery, King Josiah tore his robes and declared: “Great is the Lord’s anger that burns against us because those who have gone before us have not obeyed the words of this book; they have not acted in accordance with all that is written there concerning us.”

Now, the scriptures (2 Kings 22-23 and 2 Chronicles 34-35) relating his story to us leave me with a lot of questions. I’m curious about what kind of feedback did he initially receive? What did those closest to him really think? Regardless, he was faithful to what he knew - and eventually found - to be true as it was revealed to him by God. I think it’s an inspiring and encouraging story for the confusing and often morally ambiguous (and, hey, often outright evil) times we live in.

If you find yourself confused or looking around wondering what in the world is happening, what is wrong - I challenge you to go back to the Word of God, with an open mind and open heart.

These are confusing times. Anxious times. Things are rapidly changing before our eyes. Astonishing (and sometimes scary) events are happening daily - and will continue to do so more and more. But be encouraged that God - and the Word of God - never changes, and nothing is new under the sun. đŸ™đŸ» ❀

When I was in 6th grade, I moved to a new place. It was weird. I didn’t fit in. My teacher didn’t like me - and the feeling was entirely mutual. Granted (as an Army brat), I was no stranger to moving or starting new schools - but this was different. I suddenly felt homesick for a home I never had. I missed the friends I was never able to keep. And life was miserable. I recall so clearly the long, dread-filled walks to school, thinking “this is the last day you’ll do this. I promise you won’t have to do this tomorrow.” I was suicidal. I was only 10 years old - and found life much too hard to continue. What kept me here? My fear of going to Hell. That’s it. That’s all. I didn’t yet know the gracious, loving Father - I only feared His wrath and the threat of Hell. I needed the gracious, loving Father. I needed empathy and understanding from school faculty who continued to dismiss me (and the very real concerns my parents and I repeatedly brought to their attention).

Friend, if you find yourself questioning the purpose of life - or dread waking up and living one more day like yesterday
you are not alone. Most of us have been there at one time or another. Many “spiritual” leaders like to teach that you receive what you claim - but that is not always true. Or biblical. Many times, our experiences are entirely beyond our control. But God, the gracious and loving Saviour that He truly is, can most certainly bring you through it. He has a purpose and a plan for your life. Please find a trustworthy individual to share your feelings and experiences with who can offer sound counsel, guidance, and the support you need to survive this chapter of your life.

"Even to your old age I am He, and even to gray hairs I will carry you. I have made, and I will bear; I will carry and will save.” Isaiah 46:4
