What is people's hot take on the news on Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition OGL (Open Game License).
Essentially:
- It will be updated to allow creators to use new content from One D&D (don't know exactly what that is yet)
- Creators making more than $50,000 annually on 5th edition content will need to report their earnings to Wizards of the Coast.
- Creators (basically businesses) making more than $750,000 annually will need to pay royalties to Wizards of the Coast (we don't know how much - but less than 750K means no royalties but still reporting earnings).
- Other merchandise like dice etc... has not yet been commented on - we will see if this changes.
I think it's positive overall that they are releasing the ability to continue making content for One D&D when it officially releases. But I do have concerns for people that have created businesses around creating original D&D content - it'll all be tied to exactly how much of a % will need to be paid to WOTC, but could affect things such as pricing of products, speed of development, job opportunities etc..
I suppose we'll just have to wait and see.
Either way, I'm continuing ahead in building my career as a writer, editor/layout designer and narrative designer and I am aiming to build a business out of creating content that people enjoy to play through in their games.
