Hasta ♍️ 🌟
Hasta Nakshatra lies in the Suparna Mandala. Suparna is the great or the strong winged.
Quite interestingly, it reminded me of the childhood shadow games we played during power cuts, one of them making a winged bird (crow/ eagle) by spreading our hands on one another crossing over thumbs. We all know that the symbol of this nakshatra is the hand 🤚.
Also, I cant but help to point that in the above reference, light played a very important role as without it, no shadow would form. And thus similar is the nature of Hasta that has Sun ☀️ (Savitur) as its presiding deity. It is the light and the rays of Sun 🌞 that help Hasta to portray or reflect its true image to the world.
In the month of Ashwin, Sun 🌞 is said to be riding on Suparna and although it is said to be a winged creature. Since the Sun is riding on it , it is also called, Etasa — the horse of the Sun. Etasa is thus represented as an eagle 🦅 with horse head. It is said to be variegated in colour.
Suparna is also discussed in the Rig Veda and Yajurveda while describing the agnisayana , a fire ritual. Here, the shape of a bird is used as a fire altar. It is thought 💭 of as the carrier of the Yajamana— the one performing the ritual.
Hasta’s symbol, hand has a very deep instilled meaning. An open hand is an image recognized and used as a sign of protection or giving a blessing. This resonates with the evil eye wall hangings that are very commonly used by many for the same purpose.
In Arabic, the five is referred to as tiamsa or (Khamsa). It is a palm shaped amulet 🪬, very popular in middle east. There are also many ‘Hamsa Amulets’ that are embossed with blessings, once again proving the above.
In olden times, the young of the family would take blessings from elders at the start of the day or before beginning a journey. Hasta has the same principle, this is where a new start has been assumed by the soul. Mundka Upanishad talks about two Suparnas — individual soul and the cosmic self. It says that there is no difference between them and it is the individual self that eats the fruits of the tree in which these two birds are seated watched by the cosmic self — as a witness.
We know cosmic self as none other than the Brahman or the divine light , again showing connection with light.
Hasta involves hardwork and while it is at it, it looks at the trivial matters of life in a humorous fashion.
Hand as we said is a symbol of protection but it is also the man’s greatest tool. It plays an important part in the creative or non creative life of every human.
One interesting insight into the gesture of hand is that in many cultures it simply denoted knowledge acquired through initiation. Imagine Guru’s at Gurukul giving deeksha through the hand gesture. A lot of Kriyas in the Kriya Yoga are also done through hand.
Another reference is the Hand of God in Latin which is used to indicate the intervention in or approval of affairs on earth by god.
In all, Hasta has that power of the Sun where energy is turned to action by use of hand or knowledge.
While Hasta has a great outlook and dexterity | flexibility in its pocket, it is very passive in nature due to Moon beings its Lord. And like I said in a previous article ✍️, Moon is a receiver, it tries to absorb the light of anything around it, that helps it shine.
Similarly, Hasta in its lower form will take away light from anything that will increase its visibility and this is where the trickery of Mercury functions well. While this may be true, the upside is that Mercury’s influence also helps these natives from diving into depression that sometimes a prominent cancer ♋️ placement can cause. Having said that, Hasta natives hardly bear negative tendencies for anyone in general. There actions are solely directed towards meeting the worlds affairs ( rajasic nakshatra).
Hasta is closely related to Mercury , who has Lord Vishnu as the higher divinity. We know Lord Vishnu is the preserver and Hasta works in a similar fashion. It works hard to sustain life . It is a doer in the real sense of the word.
In Mahabharata, the pandavas were described as the fiver fingers of the hand. And although they were Kshatriyas, they were never away from action and worked hard and lived by dharma during their exile ( besides the war) to get what they considered to be rightfully theirs. In other words, Hasta ‘s aim is to keep working and sustaining to move forward while following the values and principles ( here it must imbibe the qualities of its deity- pure and without discrimination).
In Hasta, comes a very weird mix , it is a male nakshatra but falls in a female sign. The deity is male but the lord is female. This can sometimes give Hasta natives a tendency for celibacy or an aversion to sexual tendencies. Consider here the qualities of Mercury.
Sometimes, Hasta may bring problems with progeny if connected to 5 house or with father or father figures. These natives may also have a foster father or a father figure besides the biological father present in their lives. Overall, generally these natives are more close to their mothers ( unless it is prevented due to another factor).
To sum up, the placement of Moon 🌙 and Mercury for a Hasta native will determine many things such as paternal relations , mental health etc.

Few years ago, I wrote something on ‘Indra jala’ and the connection with Jyeshtha and this book reminded of the same. Copying a few lines from that article here,

Saturn 🪐 Vs Mars ☄️
“The greater evil vs the lesser evil”
To begin with my obesiense to my beloved Saturn 🪐. The anecdote ‘Evil’ in the header is not my personal perception of my friend Saturn. It is merely its image held by the majority in the current times. Similarly, Mars, our commander in chief is merely fighting our war, our traits and karmas are not his sins. Sometimes it reminds me of Bhishma, who was never fighting his own wars.
Sun 🌞, we know is our individuality and its position in the chart indicates the nature of limitations imposed on us,through our EGO. It rules the lower nature of man, one which cannot be hidden. It is the symbol of the will, of heart and is a beneficial. It is real in the sense that it helps to project what man holds inside, outside.
Moon 🌙, on the other hand is negative and receptive. It absorbs the influence of all the planets that form an aspect with it. The moon, combined with the sign forms the limitation of our personality, and these hinder us from giving the expression that the Sun wants to express. The moon is our ability to use our intelligence.
Only when these two are aligned and cooperate, we experience the harmony of soul and body.
In Saturn, the soul is limited in its expression, and thus it is the planet that denotes limitation, and where it is in bad aspect to Sun 🌞 or moon 🌙, this limitation is turned to melancholy , fear , coldness etc, specially, in the case of moon and Saturn 🪐. On the other hand, a good aspect of sun or even moon at times can greatly help. Without the help of Saturn, no rising is possible. It is the purifying power which takes over in us and works in us before it lifts our consciousness.
It is called the greater evil against Mars, the lesser evil by the West. It serves us to make us wiser by hard experiences, and thus raises our consciousness.The depressing and limiting influence of Saturn 🪐 in anyone’s life is an indication that the time of spiritual development has come. It imparts the feeling of home sickness for the ‘Real’ home.
Mars on the other hand in a bad aspect to Sun ☀️ and moon by impulsiveness ( due to the consequence of this position) makes us more or less a play thing of the circumstances ( its like a feeling that we are mere puppets). Good aspects may obviously alter this. In its positive manifestation, Mars inflicts a native with impulsiveness as well as a pioneering personality whereas in a negative manifestation, it causes overestimation and a deceiving nature.
Where an afflicted and a badly placed Saturn gives grief, Mars in a similar state is decidedly dangerous, it can make one cruel, crude, and even treacherous. If Saturn 🪐 cooperates or is fighting a war with Mars, this can be even more dangerous.
A well placed Mars is a great help generally as it helps the native in putting his thoughts to actions, though not all actions will see an ending (a typical trait of Aries ♈️). More often, it is the native’s own over pushing and over zeal that ruins his affairs/ plans.
Even when positive, Mars cannot help impressing on his strong suit which may show as impulsiveness, passionate nature, or even sensuousness.
In a nutshell, Saturn’s good influence grants higher goals, preserverance, power to work hard, deep, intellect, intuition, concentration, etc., it’s bad influence causes pain, misery, coldness, fear, mistrust, hardheartedness. A strong Saturn influence can create natural repulsion to people and such natives prefer being on their own.
We can keep on going, but what we must take from this reading is that while both Saturn and Mars have a tendency to inflict pain, the means through which this is imparted is contrasting in nature. Where one causes it mentally (although can also induce it physically through bones/muscles) the other causes it mostly through physical atrocities (again may also mentally do so). What we must remember is that both kinds of afflictions are temporary and last only until that karma (that is meant to be dealt through them) is exhausted.
