A teacher at Richneck Elementary School was shot by a student Friday afternoon, a Newport News school board member confirmed.

Michelle Price, a spokeswoman with Newport News Public Schools, said a teacher was hurt in a shooting, and Newport News police said the woman was taken to a local hospital.

Police confirm no students were hurt in the shooting.

The school was put on lockdown around 2 p.m. as police responded to reports of a shooting, emergency dispatchers said.

A few minutes before 3 p.m., a spokesperson for Newport News police said there was "no longer an active shooter" at the building on Tyner Drive. The school lockdown was lifted around 3:20 p.m., and officers were reuniting parents with their students at a reunification site.

Newport News Public Schools said in a Facebook post that the reunification site is taking place at the gym door. They said parents and guardians must present a picture ID to pick up their child.

Police Chief Steve Drew said one person was in police custody. He wouldn't say what happened, but said the most important thing after the fact was getting counselors in touch with students -- making sure they were safe and could process what happened.

Sam Schatz, a Maury High School graduate of 1976, shared some of his best teen memories with us today.

That's because he and other alumni are wondering what will happen to the historic school in Norfolk.

Tonight, the city's school board is meeting to review public comments on plans to either renovate or replace the building. Their surveys have shown about 70% of people surveyed like the plan that would have construction teams tear down Maury and build a new school in its place.

That plan could cost up to $158 million.

However, most of the people who signed up to speak at tonight's meeting are saying they'd prefer a renovation to a replacement.

"You've seen the architecture, the carvings, that stuff can't be duplicated," Schatz said.

A new court filing shows Chesapeake Walmart employees were worried about a shooting like this.

A woman who survived the mass shooting is now suing Walmart, saying she'd written complaints about the gunman months before.

As a reminder - police say in this shooting, a team lead killed six people and then himself.

There were employees and customers in the store who survived the mass shooting and are still trying to process what happened. One of those workers is Donya Prioleau. The law firm Morgan & Morgan is representing her.

"Prioleau, who had worked at the Walmart for more than a year, submitted a written complaint to Walmart about the killer’s behavior more than two months prior to the shooting, and alleges that Walmart acknowledged the complaint but then continued to employ the perpetrator as a shift lead despite having previously disciplined him for his cruel and inappropriate behavior," they said.

Her lawsuit alleges the gunman showed a pattern of concerning behavior leading up to November 22, including threats that people would "remember [his] name" if he was fired, and asking people if they'd received their active shooter training.

“He thought he was going to die.”

Hours after a gunman allegedly shot multiple people and then himself at a Chesapeake Walmart (www.13newsnow.com/article/news/crime/walmart-mass-…, the mother of one of the victims is speaking out.

In the wake of the violence, seven people are dead, and six others are being treated in area hospitals. Four of the people who were hurt weren't shot, though.

Wednesday morning, Sentara Norfolk General Hospital said they received four patients initially -- two of whom have since died. Of the two survivors, one person is in critical condition and the other person is expected to be okay.

Kimberly Shupe, the mother of the patient who is considered to be in critical condition, briefly stepped outside of the hospital to speak with 13News Now on Wednesday afternoon.

Shupe says she's thankful that her son Jalon Jones is alive and was able to pull through, even with the extent of his injuries.

"I'm grateful," she said. "To hear him say that he was fighting and that he actually felt he was leaving, but he just kept coming back, that's real. I'm very enthused that he pushed through that."

HOMETOWN TALENT | Former ODU great, Taylor Heinicke made his first start of the season in place of injured Carson Wentz, threw for two touchdowns and was 20 of 33 for 200 yards after starting 1 of 7 for 14 yards with the interception.

One of those TD throws was a perfect pass to Terry McLaurin.

“He plays like it’s his last game every single time,” McLaurin said of Heinicke. “That energy just spreads throughout this team. You just want to be able to make that play to elevate him.”

Heinicke also found McLaurin for a 12-yard completion on third-and-9 just before the two-minute warning, sparking “Terry! Terry!” chants from the Commanders fans outnumbered by Packers supporters and helping seal the team’s second consecutive ugly victory.
