We’re proud to highlight Task Force member Sarah Jones and her powerful op-ed featured in the Arizona Daily Star. Sarah, who bravely lives with a rare disease, shared how a treatment for her condition was discovered through further research on an already FDA-approved drug for another disease. As Sarah explains, “some 30 million Americans with rare diseases are waiting... for medications that don't yet exist.”
However, Sarah also raises an urgent concern: the Medicare Drug Negotiation Program’s current Orphan Drug Exclusion is too narrow, threatening incentives for the research and development of vital treatments for rare diseases. Thankfully, there’s a bipartisan solution. The ORPHAN Cures Act (H.R. 5539/S.3131) seeks to correct this by ensuring incentives for rare disease research remain strong, giving hope to millions of Americans like Sarah who are waiting for new treatments and cures.
