Hey folks,
A few months ago around the 4th of July I was seeing so many people, friends, acquaintances, and folks I had never met, writing online how mad they were. How they wished they could go somewhere else, live in another place because they are so hurt and disenfranchised by the way things are in our country.
And it hurt.
I have the box my family used to carry their belongings to the USA from Germany back in the 1800s. Itās made of scrap wood with rope handles. I think about those people a lot, and I think how different our world is now from then and how in so many ways itās the same.
So I went out and bought a flag on the 4th of July and I fly it on the front of our home. This morning, like most every morning, I put my boots on, grabbed my hat, went out and loaded the truck and now Iām going into town to work.
And Iām thinking about that box and the people who built it and brought it, and what it meant for them to come here.
Thereās a lot to be angry about. Itās totally justifiable, but I hope if you carry that with you it calls to your spirit and instead of making you want to leave, it makes you want to gather your scraps and go into the future with the mindset that we can build things. We can fix things.
People love to tell a musician to shut up and sing.
But, today Iām a carpenter. Today I will build something. Today I will work.
If you listen to this song, I hope it inspires you to do the same. Instead of throwing something away, look at what it can be and set out to make it so.
This country is just a place, the same as any. What makes it exceptional are all of us who are willing to do the work to make it.
Some may say Iām wrong about that, and maybe I am.
But thereās a line in this song that says āIām holding on to a dream Iāll live and die for.ā And I mean that with every ounce of my soul.
So I will be here, trying to make what I can the best it can be, right here, In The Middle Of It All.
