How did the Islamic calendar begin?
In the early days of Islam, there was no tradition of writing history.
During the caliphate of Umar ibn al-Khattab, Abu Musa al-Ash'ari wrote a letter to Umar, saying that the government was sending letters to different regions, but that these letters did not bear dates. He argued that there were many benefits to writing history and that it would make it easier to keep records safe. It would show when a letter was sent, when it arrived, and when it was acted upon.
Umar then consulted with the Companions of the Prophet. There were different opinions. Some Companions suggested that the Islamic year should begin from the year of the Prophet's birth, some from the year of his prophethood, some from the year of his death, and some from the year of his migration.
After careful consideration, Umar chose the year of the migration because the migration marked a clear distinction between right and wrong and gave the Prophet and his Companions the opportunity to worship in peace and security.
Choosing the first month
The first month was chosen to be Muharram because in pre-Islamic times, Arabs considered Muharram to be the first month. Four months were under consideration by the Companions: Rajab, Ramadan, Muharram, and Rabi' al-Awwal. Umar chose Muharram because it was the month after the Hajj, and thus the Hijri calendar began with the migration and the first month was Muharram.

The Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar, with 12 months.
Each month begins with the sighting of the new moon.
The Islamic year is about 10 or 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year.
The Islamic calendar is used for religious purposes, such as determining the dates of Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, and Eid al-Adha.
