Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea
Season V Episode 1
“Secret of the Deadly Creature Deep Below!”

This “episode” is the creation of TooleMan TV. It combines footage from two episodes of the series which were produced two years apart. Both episodes drew upon many of the same special effects footage and plot elements. Producer Irwin Allen was famous for reusing footage from previous Voyage episodes as well as other 20th Century Fox movies and standing sets for incorporation into his TV series productions.

Season two’s “Deadly Creature Below!” episode involved the “bug-eyed seaweed monster” menacing the diving bell, the Flying Sub, and the Seaview. The same monster was first seen in the black-and-white season one episode, “The Condemned.” The season two episode’s plot centered on a pair of prison escapees who were rescued by Seaview and then ran amok on the ship. This episode included a sequence showing Sharkey and Kowalski teaming up to repair Seaview’s ballast tank system.

Season four’s “Secret of the Deep,” written by the prolific William Welch, recycled many plot points and almost all the FX footage of “Deadly Creature Below!” The suspenseful ballast tank repair, the climactic missile and laser firing, and the Seaview, diving bell, and Flying Sub rock ‘n’ roll sequences were all re-enacted by the cast with the same dialog that was spoken by their characters two years ago.

In “Secret of the Deadly Creature Deep Below!”, the plot of both episodes has been combined to create a cohesive new story. Repeated sequences from the two previous episodes are placed back to back for contrast. Continuity problems, such as Captain Crane’s disappearing and reappearing necktie, give away the origin of the footage (hint: the Captain was “business casual” in season two).

These new features have been created especially for season five:

• A new “color presentation” bumper has been created from the ones used for seasons two and four.

• Season five’s new main title sequence starts with a freezeframe, like season four, but with five sonar pings. The music in the main title is a combination of the theme versions used in season four and season one. Other FX in the title sequence clips make use of today’s digital effects that were not available when Voyage was produced.

• New special effects have been created to portray the two parties simultaneously venturing into danger in the Flying Sub.

• The closing titles are a new edition of the theme music composed by Paul Sawtell. The credits of both episodes are shown in split screen format.

I hope you have as much fun watching “Secret of the Deadly Creature Deep Below!” as I had creating it.

Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea
Season FIVE, Episode One
"Secret of the Deadly Creature Deep Below!"

For the first time since 1968, a new episode of Voyage is released. As you may have surmised from the title, it is a combination of two related episodes - "Deadly Creature Below!" from season two, and "Secret of the Deep" from season four. "Secret" made extensive use of the plot, dialog, and film footage from "Creature."

In 2024, TooleMan TV released a new full-length episode that makes use of both episodes. Watch as the actors say the same lines two years apart. There are a few new surprises, too. It's all for fun, in the spirit of Irwin Allen!

The YouTube premiere will be announced soon. Don't miss it!

Have you ever wanted to see Captain Kirk and Admiral Nelson together? Here is your opportunity!

SOLE SURVIVOR starring Vince Edwards (Ben Casey), William Shatner, Lou Antonio (Star Trek, Let That Be Your Last Battlefield), Pat Wayne (son of John Wayne), and Richard Basehart. Also appearing is John Winston (Star Trek's Lieutenant Kyle).

SOLE SURVIVOR is a 1970 TV movie that has only been released in 4:3 format.
Plot synopsis: A WWII bomber, believed to have crashed in the ocean during the war, is found in the Libyan desert. A Colonel and Major (Shatner, Edwards) accompany the only surviving member of the crew (Basehart), who is now a General, to investigate. And watching them are the ghosts of the crew.

The overall concept of the plane lost in the Libyan desert and not found until years after the war is based on the true story of the "Lady Be Good," a B-24 Liberator that overflew its base on the way back from Italy. The wreckage of the plane was discovered by a British oil exploration team in 1958. All but one of the bodies were found in 1960; the last was never found. The story of the "Lady Be Good" was also the basis of the episode "King Nine Will Not Return", the first episode of season two of the original "The Twilight Zone." (Information courtesy IMDB)

"This is the Seaview speaking. With sorrow, I must inform you that an HDTV premiere of another exciting episode of 'Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea,' featuring me, will not be seen this Sunday, July 7. TooleMan TV is dealing with a climate crisis - Hurricane Beryl - and must keep his eyes on the blinking panels in his control room. Flying Sub and I will return next Sunday, with another HDTV premiere, God and Irwin Allen willing. Those of you who stay up late to attend premieres can get a good night's sleep."
