Hyenas, formidable scavengers of the Maasai Mara in Kenya, play a crucial role in the ecosystem's balance. Known for their distinctive vocalizations echoing across the savannah, these intelligent predators thrive in both grasslands and woodlands. Two species, the spotted hyena and the smaller striped hyena, coexist in this diverse habitat.
Scavenging forms a substantial part of the hyena's diet, complementing their skilled hunting abilities. The Mara's abundance of prey attracts hyenas to carrion, fostering an intricate interplay with other predators. Often characterized by a robust social structure, hyenas hunt in clans, exhibiting strategic cooperation.
Their robust physique and powerful jaws enable hyenas to dismantle bones, ensuring minimal waste from a kill. Their role as nature's cleanup crew contributes to the Mara's ecosystem health, preventing the spread of diseases and maintaining a delicate equilibrium among species.
